Best long distance pistol caliber

I think with my experience and skills level the standard 357 is still beyond my imagination.

We had new shooters to distance hitting targets past a mile last week using some of my specialty pistols. If you were there, you could have hit targets from 990, 1204, 1496, 1890, 2020 yards. The first three distances are relatively easy. If you can see it, you can hit it!:D

Years ago I had a Savage Stryker. Great pistol. Took a whitetail at 180 yards the first year I owned it, then promptly sold it. Fine pistol, very accurate, but in 300WSM, even with foam earplugs and shooting muffs, the darn thing hurt my ears every time I pulled the trigger.

In a traditional semiautomatic cartridge I’ve found 38 Super and 10mm to be nice flat shooting cartridges that can reach out a bit. But there’s several cartridges such as 10mm magnum and some of the less common cartridges that would likely do much better.

For revolvers, I can’t think of a better long range round than the 460 magnum. Mine shoots 200 gr bullets like a laser.

I believe the Poster asked for PISTOL calibers.

My vote is for 38 Super out of a Government 1911.

I figured the question Best Long Distance Pistol Caliber ment.

If it fits in a pistol and can be safely fired then its a pistol round.

I used to shoot at 300 meters a lot. The best handgun I used for that was a Ruger Bisley 7.5 in. in .41 Rem. (handloads) But we used to hit steel targets at 300 pretty regularly with our .45 1911 race guns too (no one would believe it until you showed them). All guns had black metallic sights. It was just a matter of figuring out how much hold over was needed and good trigger control.
