what's the best choice of a makarov for quality, price, and availability? i want to add one to my surplus collection.

Right now that would probably have to be a Bulgarian military version as are currently being imported. You should be able to find a very nice example for less than $200 if you look. Triggers on mine are a bit hard but they work rather well and I'm happy with them.

If you consider the price it would cost to build one of these today in the USA; it would be between $450-550,therefore any Bulgarian , Russian ,or E. German Mak is a steal at $200-400. My 2 cents worth!

I'm not too sure about that statement but for less than $200 they are still a deal. I just got a Bulg Mak for $120 in like new cond. and needless to say, I am very happy about that purchase. If someone offered me $220 for it, I would sell it in a heartbeat however. They are good guns for the money but not worth anywhere near $450. For $450 you can buy a like new Kahr K-9 which would be better than any Mak ever made in every catagory. Lets not get crazy about Maks. For the price they are solid reliable guns but they lack power and many other things that keep them from ever being anymore than a decent pistol.

To each their own...Personally - I'd never buy a Kahr to replace my Mak...

Of course, I'd never buy a Kahr in the first place...
