Best Mauser Rifle?

My favorite Mauser is the M96 swede but not the full length, the M38. But, for historical purposes its hard to beat the allure of the German K98k, I will never give up my BNZ 4!

My first large rifle was/is a 8mm Mauser, (8x57), and it's an M98? I think. There is a place on top of the receiver that has some grind marks, I was told that is where the old 'nazi proof mark' was ground off.

I'd double check that. The rifles most notorious for grinder marks atop the receiver are the Arisaka, which are a Mauser based design. Though I haven't tried it, I imagine some of them could chamber and fire 8x57 (the Arisaka is 7.7x58). Not safe, though.

I have a K98 that has a couple of swastikas stamped on it. How do K98s compare? I've shot it from a lead sled but the front slight is over to the right as far as you can get it, but its grouping is tight. But that front sight positioned that way drives me crazy.

I have a Yugo M48 that is a fine shooter and I haven't had a lick of problems with it.

I have a PILE of ammo that I intend to put through it. And I deer hunt with it.

But from what I have read (who knows what the info is worth), the 24/47 is a superior rifle and the VZ 24 is better yet.

The czech mausers that aimsurplus has right now is exactly what I would buy if I were looking for a mauser right now.

Would it make sense to buy a K98 and start stockpiling ammo for an End of the World/civil unrest/moving to the forest/SHTF situation? or is the 8mm not common enough for searching for ammo once the population has died off (think Resident Evil: Extinction/Mad Max)?

I know the "shtf" threads are pretty annoying, but I've always loved K98's and I don't have any rifles..so I figured now is as good a time as any.

Please and Thank you!:D

I have collected a few, specially in the past couple years.Defining best is hard to do for me.It really depends on the individual rifle since there will be varying degrees of fit and finish since most are surplus.

So far I have 3 Argentine 1909 , 2 Brazilian 1908,Chilean 1895,Venezuelan 24/30,Venezuelan 24/30 target rifle,2 Persian BRNO,Czech 98/22,Turkish,K98,Portuguese Vergueiro 04/39,3 Swedish m96,Swedish m38,2 Yugo 24/47

I think that's it:confused:But all are in excellent condition and I have to say overall South American contract mausers and FN mausers are the best as far as craftmanship, but they tend to be pricy because also. The Persian and Swedes are top notch also.

As far as bang for the buck, the Yugoslavian's are hard to beat,so is a Russian capture K98 if with excellent barrel.

Having shot all of them though, for the most part most of them do 2 to 2-1/2 inch groups @100yds,with some doing 3 or 3 1/2 inches all depending on ammo and how good I shoot at the time.Actually one of my accurate so far has been the Czech 98/22 which isn't that of a expensive rifle to find.

You may have to work the front sight though, either by replacing it or building it up because some do shoot high at 100yds,if you want to get it shooting bulls at that range.

can I post pics?:p

8MM ammo availability

I went to a couple of gun shops in the local LV area and to Sportsmans Warehouse. There was a lot of 8MM ammo available. Besides the .303 ammo; it was the most military surplus ammo in supply. This means that I will probably be shooting my m48 more than my other military surplus rifles (Mosin, Krag, even SKS). Hopefully, the gunshow this next weekend will allow me to replinish my ammo supplies.

Another vote for the 24/47. Not only is the design solid, quite a few of them are in like new condition. Lot of bright shiny bores. That to me is also a big plus compared to getting a war capture K.98 or other somesuch that's for sale right now out of the catalogs.

Swede for sure. I've probably owned about 25 Mausers and the Swedes are for sure the best. Persians are possibly equal to them in craftsmanship but I like the 6.5x55 round more than 8mm.
