$300, now-a-days isn't enough to buy any decent firearm, pistol or rifle. Inflation is the problem in 2008. cliffy

I suppose most of my collection is trash then? If you can't get a good firearm for under $300, way under $300 you are wasting money. More expensive guns are good too, but sub $300 guns are usually a great value.

Firestorm Mini 9mm/Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact. I got mine for $296 plus tax. They make a 10 round version for CA. Another good choice might be a 12 gauge shotgun either a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500.

By the way all 4 of my handguns can be purchased for close to or less than $300 and I consider all of them to be better than decent. Even my Hi-Point has been a good shooter especially for the price I paid for it.

Beretta model 70 .22
Hi-Point 9mm
Firestorm Mini 9mm
Ruger LCP .380

I picked up my MK II and MK III for $250 each and I consider them plenty decent.

+1 on Ruger P95

Based on OK pricing, I don't know about CA. Gunshop by me has them ~$300, I paid $270 NIB at a gunshow this summer. Good luck.

Remember that a rifle requires a scope of equal or more $$$. A decent .22 LR pistol costs $400 plus. Save up before using your coupon on something you'll later regret. $300, now-a-days isn't enough to buy any decent firearm, pistol or rifle. Inflation is the problem in 2008. cliffy

WHAT!!! Thats crazy cause my Ruger MKIII shoots the 10 ring out at 25 yards and it was 239. I am trying not to go low road here but you are not shopping around well enough or doing enough research on firearms to make that assertion. Inflation affects everything not just guns, 400 bucks would get him a ruger 10-22 base model and a ruger MK III, heck if he decided he could live with used he could possibly stretch it further.

If you want a plinker pistol I recommend the Ruger MKIII.
If you want a plinker rifle I suggest a 10-22 and you can upgrade to a scope later.

Alot of .22s come to mind, they are usually very over looked for their training/fun uses, Ammo is cheap and if you have a "flinch" it a great way to cure it. A mossy or rem pump (base models) can be had for under 300. Ive seen some REAL nice stoeger O/U shooties for like 325 local, which is alittel over but well with it if thats what your into. For hand guns, a sigma or p95 usually runs under 300, nither are considered "top shelf" by any means, but they a well built and reliable. The sig p6s and former LE s&w 59s run around 250-300 also. A large variety of mil-surps can also be had for under 300, some you might be able to buy 2 even. I check the used racks at local shops often and find myself saying "well if I only had a spare 200 bucks..." 300 bucks can buy alot of gun, as long as you stay clear of the jennings/bryco/whatever they call it now, and the cricket.

I have been absolutely happy with my Marlin papoose. I hike and it is light and handy. It is actually more accrate than my 10/22 carbine.

Maybe I Paid Too Much

My nib Ruger Mark III Competition Model cost me $415. The Bushnell Trophy Red-Dot cost me $78 to set atop it. Then there's tax. The dealer claimed he only charged 10% over his cost. Maybe he saw me coming, and said, "A sucker born." cliffy

Thanks for the great ideas. I already have a few mentioned above Mainly I shoot handgun because the ranges for that are cheaper and closer sometimes I can get away with shooting handgun cal long guns on the ranges too. So far The Marlin papoose is looking like the best bet but I might just wait and watch small section of shelf where used guns show up. I mostly just wanted to get ideas of what might be around in my price range, The ruger P series sounds cool if they carry those.

Just save up and get what YOU want.

If you are having such a difficult time deciding simply wait.

RancidSumo : 1,045 +1 for CZ rimfires. Go for iron sights, it is a lot of fun. The 452 Lux is proably the most accurate but I like the FS. Either way you can't go wrong.

Beat me to it, that's what I was gonna say.
