Best "Range Gun"

Any 22 LR rifle/pistol/revolver if you are on a budget. Otherwise an AR-15 on the range is pure joy, if you are not on a budget.

Budget is getting tight, but I have a blast shooting my .22s anytime.
I seem to be the only shotgun nut here. Nothing more fun than a couple rounds of 5 stand with the whacky bunch of guys at the club.

SAFN blasting 1 gallon water jugs 15ft away on muddy ground. Damn that was fun and made a mess.:D:cool:

That rifle drives me nuts sometimes, dialing it in, trying to keep the firing pin from sticking...but when it does work WOW better than my friends M1A. Its like an Italian car.

For me, I'd have to say my Savage Mark II, .22LR with Leupold 4X scope. It is quite capable for 100 yard shots at clay pigeons, and even much smaller objects. Even at 200 yards, it makes a distinct "ting" when the projectile hits the steel gong. What wouldn't be to like: the ammo is cheap; the recoil non-existent. The barrel won't over-heat even on summer days, and I just enjoy it. It makes for a good break while my centerfire rifles cool off after 3 to 5 rounds.

Very cool thread idea. Thanks for starting it.

where I am now the ranges aren't really large cal friendly and I am thinking about selling her.

 7.62x54R is a large caliber? I'm looking to add an M38 to my collection though ;)

On topic, I'm split between a Mosin (huge boom), SKS/AK (nice bang and autoloading) or .22 rife (endless shooting fun).

Gotta' say my Finn M39 after I beat the piss out of myself with an M44. I love the accuracy of my M39 and the ammo is comparatively cheap.

I also have a 541-X that I have been playing around with... has been satisfying with Timney Trigger installed.

A Draco pistol is an absolute blast at the range; unfortunately that is about all they are good for! Super fun though.

The 686+ 6" is just so much fun to shoot. Full-bore .357s always get attention on the line, and it is so freaky accurate that you are filled with confidence that you could make any shot with this gun. All my other guns were chosen with care and I train with them hard, but the 686 is the handgun that makes me feel invincible.

I haven't found anything yet that hasn't been fun to shoot informally. If it's safe, I would enjoy it.

For cheap, fast fun, a Ruger 10/22 and a Single Six Convertible, plus my Marlin bolt as I like to try and wring as much out of those little 22's as I can.
If I'm going for range and accuracy, it's my Rem. 700 in .243 that's zeroed at 200 yds.

An AR-15 shooting at small gongs.

My range has gongs hanging at 200 and 400 yards. The smallest at each station is about 4" diameter. At 200 yds. - cinch. At 400 yds. - a bit tougher to hit the gong while it's swinging but still a riot. My son has the record of hitting the 4" gong at 400 yds by hitting it each and every time it swings toward the front. The object is to keep it from swinging more than half-way back toward you. He recorded 10 consecutive hits without letting it get closer than vertical. I've done 5 or 6.

The most fun I've ever had with any firearms was shooting a suppressed Ruger Mark II and a suppressed full auto AR15 with a .22 upper on it. I don't think we spent $100 on ammo all day and no one was wearing hearing protection.

Other than that, larger calibers are fun, but for extended shooting on weekend outings, .22s are a must have. Personally, I love my single six.

For a pistol, I have a gunsmithed S&W model 10 that is very fun to shoot, and super accurate. Best $150 firearm I even purchased!

Well my fun gun would be my ruger 10/22 custom but at a dedicated range where only puching paper is allowed ,fun is limited. Can't walk empty shotguns shells or shoot steel or bowlingpins or most any fun things. Only try'n to punch small groups.
