One Band: "Lynyrd Skynyrd"

"Gimme Three Steps"

"I was cutting the rug
Down at a place called The Jug
With a girl named Linda Lu
When in walked a man
With a gun in his hand
And he was looking for you know who.
He said, "Hey there fellow,
With the hair colored yellow,
Watcha tryin' to prove?
'Cause that's my woman there
And I'm a man who cares
And this might be all for you."

I was scared and fearing for my life.
I was shakin' like a leaf on a tree.
'Cause he was lean, mean,
Big and bad, Lord,
Pointin' that gun at me.
I said, "Wait a minute, mister,
I didn't even kiss her.
Don't want no trouble with you.
And I know you don't owe me
But I wish you'd let me
Ask one favor from you."

(Chorus)
"Won't you give me three steps,
Gimme three steps mister,
Gimme three steps towards the door?
Gimme three steps
Gimme three steps mister,
And you'll never see me no more."

Well the crowd cleared away
And I began to pray
As the water fell on the floor.
And I'm telling you son,
Well, it ain't no fun
Staring straight down a forty-four.
Well he turned and screamed at Linda Lu
And that's the break I was looking for.
And you could hear me screaming a mile away
As I was headed out towards the door."

Then there's "Saturday Night Special", IMO takes a stand against all handguns. It's one of my least favorites.

"Hand guns are made for killin'
Ain't no good for nothin' else
And if you like your whiskey
You might even shoot yourself
So why don't we dump 'em people
To the bottom of the sea
Before some fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me

Its a Saturday night special
Got a barrel that's blue and cold
Ain't no good for nothin'
But put a man six feet in a hole."

Another vote for The Guns of Brixton.

Cocaine Blues.

Early one mornin' while makin' the rounds
I took a shot of cocaine and I shot my woman down
I went right home and I went to bed
I stuck that lovin' .44 beneath my head

Every time I hear I Hung My Head I :banghead:

I always thought that Skid Row song was funny...
These two kids.
Are underage drinking, and on drugs...
One steals his dad's gun, and the other kid is all "LOL DUDE SHOOT ME"
And does.

18 and Life, right?

Heard Him Play This In Houston

Hey Joe / Jimi Hendrix

Hey Joe, where you goin' with that gun in your hand
Hey Joe, I said where ya goin' with that gun in your hand

/ C G D A E EE7 E - / :

I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady now
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man
I'm goin' down to shoot my old lady
You know I caught her messin' 'round with another man
Huh, and that ain't to cool

Hey Joe, I heard you shot your woman down
You shot her down down
Hey Joe, I heard you shot your lady down
You shot her down to the ground

Yes, I did, I shot her
You know I caught her messin' 'round, messin' 'round town
Yes, I did, I shot her
You know I caught my old lady messin' 'round the town
And I gave her the gun, I shot her

Hey Joe, where you gonna run to now
Where you gonna run to
Hey Joe, I said, where you gonna run to now
Where you, where you gonna go

Well dig it
I'm goin' way down south
Way down Mexico way, alright
I'm goin' way down south
Way down where I can be free
Ain't no one gonna find me
Ain't no hangman gonna find me
He ain't gonna put a rope around me
You better believe it right now
Hey Joe, you better run on down
Goodbye, everybody

I like Shotgun Boogie/I] by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

"Her daddy's got a 16 gauge choked down like a rifle,"

Also mentions a 12 and the .410, if I remember right.

Not sure that they are my "favorites", but two that haven't been mentioned:

"The Battle of New Orleans"

and a new one, I think it is called "What was I thinkin'" (line about the dad with the 12 gauge.)

Grand Funk Railroad: Don't let 'em take your guns.
Hank Williams Jr.: Country boy can survive.
Ted Nugent: I shoot back!

That's SPF 45 sunblock, ace. ;)

Tory, I know. Hence the "not gun related" note. Taken out of context, it sounds better.

Damn. Someone got to "Guns Of Brixton" before me :) And I've only ever heard the Nick Cave version of "Stagger Lee" before. Didn't know that someone else wrote it until I checked the CD booklet on "Murder Ballads"...
But here's one you missed - "16 shells from a .30-06" by Tom Waits. And on "Gun Street Girl" he mentions blowing a "hole in the hood of a yellow Corvette" with a "brand new Michigan twenty-gauge", which surely earns him some points...
Oh, and let's not forget how "Small-Change got rained on, with his own .38". Actually, now that I think about it, the boy Waits has quite a few gun-related songs in his back-catalogue.

And Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" starts off with "Load up on guns, bring your friends..."

If you count rap songs, we could here for months... :p

"Rifles of the IRA" as performed by the Wolfe Tones.
1. In nineteen hundred and sixteen
The forces of the crown
For to take the Orange, White, and Green
Bombarded Dublin Town
But in '21, Britannia's huns
Were forced earn their pay,
When the black and tans,
Like lightning ran
From the Rifles of the IRA!

2. They burned their way through Munster
Then laid Leinster on the rack
Through Connacht, and through Ulster
Marched the men in brown and black
They shot down wives and children
In their own heroic way,
But the black and tans,
Like lightning ran
From the Rifles of the IRA!

3. They hanged young Kevin Barry high
Just a lad of eighteen years
Cork City's flames lit up in the sky
But our brave lads new no fear
The Cork brigade with hand-grenades
In ambush wait and lay,
And the black and tans,
Like lightning ran
From the Rifles of the IRA!

4. The tans were got, taken out and shot
By a brave and valiant few
Sean Treacy, Dinny Lacey
And Tom Barry's gallant crew
Though we're not free yet we won't forget
Until our dying day,
How the black and tans,
Like lightning ran
From the Rifles of the IRA!

While not exactly a "gun song", "Rooster" by Alice in Chains needs to be on the list...

Ain't Found A Way To
Kill Me Yet
Eyes Burn With Stinging
Sweat
Seems Every Path Leads Me To
Nowhere
Wife And Kids And Household Pet
Army Green Was No Safe Bet
The Bullets Scream To Me From Somewhere

Here They Come To Snuff The Rooster
Yeah Here Come The Rooster
You Know He Ain't Gonna Die

Walkin' Tall Machine Gun Man
They Spit On Me In My Homeland
Gloria Sent Me Pictures
Of My Boy
Got My Pills 'Gainst
Mosquito Death
My Buddy's Breathin'
His Dyin' Breath
Oh God Please Won't You Help
Me Make It Through

Or then there's Nickleback's "Never Again":

He's drunk again, it's time to fight
She must have done something wrong tonight
The living room becomes a boxing ring
It's time to run when you see him clenching his hands
She's just a woman... never again

I hear her scream from down the hall
Amazing she can even talk at all
She cries to me... "go back to bed"
I'm terrified that she'll wind up dead in his hands
She's just a woman... never again

Been there before but not like this
Seen it before but not like this
Never before have I ever seen it this bad
She's just a woman... never again

Just tell the nurse you slipped and fell
It starts to sting as it starts to swell
She looks at you... she wants the truth
It's right out there in the waiting room with those hands
Lookin' just as sweet as he can... never again

Seen it before but not like this
Been there before but not like this
Never before have I ever seen it this bad
She's just a woman... never again

Father's a name you haven't earned yet
You're just a child with a temper
Haven't you heard "don't hit a lady"
Kickin' your a** would be a pleasure

He's drunk again, it's time to fight
Same old s***, just on a different night
She grabs the gun, she's had enough
Tonight she'll find out how f*****' tough is this man
Pulls the trigger fast as she can... never again

Seen it before but not like this
Been there before but not like this
Never before have I ever seen it this bad
She's just a woman... never again

If THAT isn't an example of a "good gun song", then I muct not understand the idea...

"Johnson's Motorcar" :)

Good call. Forgot all about that one.

Whisky in the Jar has some good gun related lyrics too.

"I first produced my pistol, then produced my rapier..."

"Jenny took me charges and she filled them up with water. Then called for Captain Ferril to be ready for a slaughter"

"I then produced my pistol for she'd stolen away my rapier. I couldn't shoot the water so a'prisoner I was taken..."

I am surprised noone mentioned "Bad Company" by the same."I was born, sixgun in my hand, behind a gun I take my final stand. That's why they call me Bad Company."

Dagnabbit, I was just about to say that! Also, I thought the Sheryl Crow line about "have my 45 on so I can rock on" was for her poor songs' character having a 45 speed record player. But I thought of the other connotation, as well....
