"Must haves" are an angled eyepiece and a large diameter objective for max light gathering. Does not have to be rubber coated or waterproof. Just want something I can see clearly through and is reliable. $500 is my limit including eyepiece etc. Any opinions on which one to get?

Might take a look at the Nikon Sky & Earth. I believe I paid about $485 for my 80mm version (60mm version is substantially cheaper), including the zoom eyepiece. Seems like a pretty decent scope and includes a padded case.

Ditto on the Nikon Sky & Earth. I have the 60mm with a 15x-45x zoom eyepiece. The 60mm isn't available with an angled lens, but I can attest to the clarity and quality of these scopes. They’re top notch.

I would agree that Kowa makes some great scopes (and a few that are very average). But, the operative words in your suggestion are "If you can find a...".

What are they going for (when you can find one) these days?

Steve Smith spotted a Kowa 601 on eBay for me - what was it, mid 500s? Had the 25x LER eyepiece, 45 degree - love it.

Cry once and buy nice glass.
