So I recently learned that switchblades are now legal in my state and would like to get one. What is the best place to look for these knives? Anyone have any recommendations?

Do you mean any automatic knife, or specifically side-openers?

John

I'm guessing side openers, the knives that are normally romanticised as switch blades. I've taken a look at SOG knives and like the autos that they make. Are they any good?

Microtech has the fastest mechanisms for out the front. Dalton makes some awesome designs, too.
Benchmades are a fraction of a second slower.

Look for sources inside the state at local gun shows. Also, check with the local police supply shops since they were dealing in them before the law was changed. Abe’s Awesome Armaments in New Hampton, NH is a good place to start.

Internet sources to look at are my good buddy Jerry Skelton, Josh at PVK, and RayJay

I hear that Robbie Dalton is not going to be making mass batches of knives so grab a Dalton as fast as you can.

if i was going to buy an auto, right now, it'd probably be a Leverletto. they just have that whole old meets new thing going on.

bladeplay, bladehq, newgrahmknives, there's lots of places. most companies make one. kershaw has one called the Breakout I have not handled, but it seems to be the right size, weight and price to do well.

now, having a switchblade it cool, but my auto assist or even just thumb stud knives deploy faster in a lighter weight package. specifically I have the benchmade auto stryker and the nitrous stryker. the nitrous is much faster and lighter with a getter grip to it. Not saying don't get one, but they're not that great. And the out the front knives (microtech, benchmade) didn't impress me at all. cool, yes. solid, no. fast deployment no.

you can join bladeforums and check out the for sale section. there are some deals there sometimes.

I have the BM infidel,BM Presidio SBK, Dalton Offering and the Microtech Scarab.

Out the front knives are very cool. Some say they are not as sturdy. There is a tiny amount of wiggle when locked out. Microtech is faster than benchmade.

Side release like the Presidio is slow. However my Dalton is FAST. You have to decide upon what you want, what it's use will be, and how much you wanna spend.

I can take ANY knife with a thumb stud and open as fast as an
Automatic with the flick of my thumb. So any knife I have is a potential switchblade.

Microtech makes top notch knives but I sold mine and the MSAR STG-556 as well. I could -never- get anyone at customer service to contact me back for replacement parts after trying their contacts on the website and two contacts from business cards obtained at the Blade Show West. Not even a reply. YMMV. I've heard they are good to LEO/MIL but if they treat two groups of customers that differently, I'll spend my money elsewhere.

Benchmade on the other hand has awesome customer service. Never had a problem their their manual folders and I'm willing to bet it's no different with their auto products.

I was under the impression that Dalton no longer makes OTF autos. It made me sad to find that out.

The Microtech OTF knives are my personal favorite for autos, though I've not owned one for a while now. :)

Thumbstud or assisted opener is just as fast and as Joe Citizen using a switchblade doesn't appeal to LEOs or Judges if you use it.

I own a couple Microtech OTF, and a Protech side opener. The out the front autos are much faster then AO or thumbstud.

true, but by the time I get an OTF out of my pocket (with pocket clip) and my hand positioned properly on the handle to push forward on the opening pushy thing with sufficient force, I find the OTF's just slower overall to deploy. Probably it's just a matter of practice and maybe the one I was using was just stiff.

All that said, I do like the looks of the bradley underboss.

Customs: Vallottons, John W. Smith, Marfione, Harkens, Wayland,

Production: Microtech, ProTech, Piranha, Benchmade, Spyderco, Randal King Knives, SOG, Capolin (Italy), Huebertus (Germany), Lone Wolf,

Whet your taste with ONE. However a good Gryptilian, SOG or Spyderco will open as fast for a fraction of the cost.
