Best Vehicle Handgun?

I would just get whatever used Glock you could find in whatever caliber. Test fire, clean, reload, forget about it. 40's are plentiful around here. I have a 23 that lives in my truck.

Lately I have been rethinking my need to carry a gun in my truck (Super Duty F-250), my principal need stems from carrying the evening bank deposit to the bank from work on most days. The reality of the situation is it is mostly checks these days, but can still include several thousand dollars in cash occasionally, the perception of a fairly thick deposit bag is probably a bit more than the reality, and in this case I think the perception is the big issue. In the past I have just grabbed whatever was handy (note I live in a state where in vehicle carry is relatively unrestricted), often a semi-auto of some type, .45ACP, 40S&W, etc. I am now considering purchasing a gun just for the purpose, I want something that will resist corrosion (condensation is a problem around here certain times of year), be relatively cheap so if it gets stolen I am not out a lot of money (say under $500 used market), small enough not get in the way in the confines of a vehicle. Most likely carry position is the tray next to the ignition switch or by the seatbelt clip between the seats. What are your thoughts?
Model 64 loaded with some Underwood 38 +P ~ 1200 FPS

I have been trying this "truck gun" concept for a number of years. I've rotated different firearms into the mix. I've stored a firearm in the vehicle and I've tried a dedicated carry bag for firearm and reloads. The truth is, it really depends where you live. I live in rural USA. Low crime area. Low traffic. Still, I've had my vehicle broken into during that time. They got the contents of my center console, including a checkbook. They didn't find the 2 weapons in the vehicle.

I carry a beater winnie 94 and a side arm in the vehicle. Sometimes the firearms are left in the vehicle over night, sometimes not. I worry about them all the time. They are there for emergency situations but stored far enough away from the driver as to be unavailable for an immediate/urgent use. They are tools and part of a disaster preparedness plan and are stored accordingly. I have a concealed carry permit and carry on a regular basis. The truck guns are in addition to the concealed carry on my person. There is no one solution, and it is something we must constantly work on but never can perfect or make fool proof.

My vote would be for something not too valuable as temp and humidity swings in a gun stored in a truck can be extreme. I'd also vote for something that can be retrieved from its stowed position and easily slipped into a pocket for the brief trip to the bank, market etc. (i.e if I need to put on a holster for a 3 min trip to the atm, the gun is likely staying in the truck) . Something durable and simple to use would be on my check list too.
A S&W J frame, S&W BG380/shield or something like a Ruger LC9S comes to mind.

Talk about reviving a zombie thread (April 2011). :what:

Always a good topic though. I don't keep a truck gun. I only have an unattended gun in my vehicle on the rare occasion I can't carry in some place. In that case it is locked in a reasonably secure container (not 18GA steel) for a short duration of time. On long trips I usually have a Maxpedition Remora with me that has another handgun in it.

I want an NEF 12 cut down for my truck shotty. Still trying to decide on a pistol. Was thinking maybe a bersa 380 auto. Mostly because one is bone simple and the other seems to be pretty affordable with a solid re for function.

during hunting season I keep a 12 gauge H&R partner ($135) in m truck with some 00 and slugs for unexpected opportunities, along with the other clothing and whatnot required. Otherwise just my tired old glock 23 lives there.

Having a truck/car gun stolen gives me hesitation on the whole idea. We say get a cheap gun your only out a few hundred bucks but what about arming a criminal? I understand they get their weapons illegally other ways but it would bug the heck out of me knowing some low life has one of "my" guns that they could use to do evil. Just my opinion.

That's why I don't just leave them in there anymore. They stole my flock out the house when I was renting in the city. Vexed me to the day.

Interesting point.

Also might want to re-think keeping cash around the house, too, since it can be stolen by a criminal. Given that cash can be used by a criminal to buy a gun (or other implements to further his criminality) and victimize the innocent, best keep that cash locked up safe in the bank where criminals can't get to it.

/\ /\. Hmmmm. Cunning..

But. Some of us live in "nicer" neighborhoods. Have loud dogs. Situations where someone is always home and neighbors who look out. Not a guarantee but still helps reduce the risk. We do however drive and park all over. I thank god ive never had a home burglary. But my truck has been broken into three times. While parked in other "places". So I'll still stick with my opinion but not over react like you are suggesting.
