I want to make up a surprise load for one of the fellows we shoot with all the time. I already reload 12 ga so have everything I need except load data.

I have AA hulls and wads for 1 oz loads. I also have ffg and fffg black powder. I just need to know a weight for a light load that won't leave anything stuck in the bore.

In my smooth 12ga. .72cal. smooth bores, I load 90 gr. of 2F for hunting and 70grs. of 2f for anything less.

    Weight of powder!

Sounds like I won't be able to use my one piece wads. I'll weigh out some ffg powder and compare the volumes.

So you want a heavy load or a light load for that "surprise" load?

Just a light load. Then we get to watch him clean the residue out of his Citori.

70 gr by volume will work.
I have loaded 50 gr under 25 pellets of #4 buck, hardly kicked

three drams by volume of 2Fg(about 82 grains weight) will do it

I'll see if I can locate a few over powder wads as I don't think the required amount of black powder will fit under my one piece wads.

Might not be worth the effort anyway.

    Thanks

I shoot 12 g shotgun in CAS and shoot black powder at times. This is what I use...

    red AA hull
    Win 409 primer
    Grey wad
    7/8 oz #8 shot
1.9 cc of Hodgdon Triple Seven FFg BP substitute

I have one of the Lee Dipper sets and 1.9cc is one of the dippers in the set. This load has a very light recoil but plenty of smoke. The recoil is the same as the Winchester "Featherlite" loads, now call low noise low recoil.
