I'm running low on ffg. I shoot an inline muzzleloader and was wondering if Black horn 209 is as good as the marketing claims. Not needing to clean it every time if I'm planning on shooting more than one day in a row is very appealing. However it isn't worth losing accuracy or having ignition problems. Also velocity doesn't matter at the ranges I hunt.

I had ignition problems using it in my Accura V1 . I was using CCI magnum primers and I had a clean breech plug . After that I bought a modified breech plug and still every now and then it would hangfire . It is easy to load without swabbing between shots . I could shoot about 10 times before it started getting harder to load . Accuracy was good , my best group was with 90 grains .

I will not use it for hunting in my inline , but it might work fine in ours , you will just have to try it .

This was the main thing that worried me. I shoot a lot but only get to hunt 1 weekend and would hate to have it not go off.

I use Remington 209 primers that are well over a decade old. I use a conversion for the regular nipple (Hubbard Mag-spark) in a sidelock. I've never had a misfire in it with BH 209. I use it for hunting every year. You have to clean the carbon out of the breech plug hole about every 6 shots by twisting the appropriate size drill bit in it by hand - Not a power drill.

Do not use muzzleloader 209 primers.

Yes , I was using CCI 209 shotgun magnum primers and cleaning with a drill bit and wire every 3 shots . I do not trust it for hunting in my CVA inline rifle .

Hey brother the website only says the following:
"With Blackhorn 209, multiple shots can be easily loaded without the inconvenience of swabbing the barrel."
This is in reference to swabbing between shots on a single day at the range..., and is talking about loading multiple rounds and the difficulty of that loading vs. the tightness of the sabot to the bore. I haven't found anything official on their website that says you can go a day or days without cleaning the bore. It MAY react just like a modern smokeless poweder when it comes to corrosion, since the company does recommend a modern solvent rather than a water based solvent for cleaning. But I wouldn't trust it any more than I trust to leave my bolt-action rifles uncleaned after a day at the range. Granted...., that may be simply my vintage military training kicking in, but my recommendation for what it's worth is to not let your inline sit for more than a day without cleaning it after a trip to the range. Even if it's stainless.

Heck just pull the breech plug and run a snake down the bore if cleaning is such a chore, AND while your main charge is Blackhorn 209, your primer isn't so you probably should pull the breech and clean that anyway, right? Well, while it's out....

I've shot over 300 loads of BH209 in a Traditions and old Knight muzzy with both CCI mag and Win 209 primers and never had a misfire. I've hunted with BH209 for 3 years now in all kinds of weather and never had a problem. Just last weekend I put 14 rounds through the muzzy and didn't have to clean the breech plug but I did swap the barrel once. When I'm done shooting I do clean the breech plug with a drill bit but I have never had to clean the breech plug while shooting, I suppose the most I've shot at one time was probably around 25 shots. So far I have no complaints with the BH209 powder.

Do you have a link to where you got yours done ?
Red rick, sorry it took me this long to reply. Mr. Laughlin in the below thread did mine. Here he explains how he does them in case you have someone local or can do yourself. He is also on modernmuzzleloader.com. Hope I am not breaking any rules referencing other forums....

Edited to add: prior to modification I had hang fires using CCI 209m primers. Since the mod, I have only used WIN 209s with no issues. The winchesters are the longest primer , and in conjunction with shimming the firing pin I have little to no blowback, which of course also helps with positive ignition.
