Al Pendray, one of the greatest contributors to modern knifemaking, died yesterday.
Al rediscovered Wootz steel which had been lost since the Crusades. The "watered silk" pattern to the surface of the steel is what was known as damascus. Along with Professor Vanderhoven he worked diligently to understand and learn the intricacies of Indian wootz.
He was a great bladesmith as well and generous with his time.
