Thanks for posting the article. I really enjoyed it and learned some new stuff as well.
We went to the MET last Spring and the swords and weapons on display there are amazing.

Don't know about the "blood rust". Could be...

-So, in summation:
A sword may have an edge of wootz steel but it won't be made entirely of wootz if it's any good; and,
Damascus probably refers to water-patterned steel and not to some pace in Syria; and,
Blood still acts and smells like blood if heated or disturbed.

This matches my own readings and experiences.
