I don't get it... Manchin is a pro gun-control Democrat, isn't he? So why would Bloomberg's support be a surprise?

What am I missing here?

Appears Manchin has two faces much like about every other politician. I also call it. Manchin is a fudd.

Also appears he is skilled at fooling not only his states voters, but even high level folks in the nra....anyone really that surprised though? I've gotten used to all the lying and backstabbing done to the citizens of this country....that it no longer even makes me do a double take anymore. Business as usual.

You are missing that he hasn't generally been "pro gun control" at all. This is the guy who shot (with a rifle) the cap-and-trade bill in a TV commercial a couple years ago. He has generally been pretty pro-firearms prior to 2013. I would say that he's generally still pro firearms, despite what has happened this year. As an earlier poster said, though, he would qualify as a 'fudd'.

I think that he believed that the background check bill would have been a "reasonable" compromise. Let's not get so wrapped around the RKBA-axle that we forget that the whole world is not binary. Unfortunately, not being "for us" does not automatically mean someone is "against us". Manchin supporting background checks does not make him "anti-gun", and in fact, in his mind he is still very pro firearms.

I think that belief is what has made him so angry about the NRA's reaction to his sponsoring the background check bill -- he very much sees himself as pro gun. Him pushing back against the NRA, and bedding with Bloomberg in this instance, is pushback to that.
