Who makes them? Who converts them? Basically I am looking for a new carry gun. I am interested in getting a bobtail 1911 of some sort or getting a 1911 and having it bobtailed. Any information is welcome.

Dan Wesson makes them i know but have never owned a dw tho i read pretty good reports online . Most smiths can and will do a conversion since its fairly simple and should not affect the function of the 1911 in any way as far as feed , accuracy , and reliability goes .

I think Ed Brown created the original bobtail modification, gunsmith great who now manufactures his own line of pistols & 1911 parts.

    http://www.edbrown.com/cgi-bin/start.cgi/customhandguns.htm

Many smiths can do the conversion, don't know how easy it is to machine the corner cut & replace mainspring & MSH.

DW uses alot of Ed Brown parts in their CBOB. I've had mine for about 8 monts and 1800 rounds & have really enjoyed it :D

I have looked at the Ed Browns (too pricey for me) and the Dan Wessons (which I have heard good things about). I guess the problem is that it seems very few people actually bobtail straight from the factory. I am leaning towards picking up a S&W, Colt, or Kimber and having a bobtail put on it. Any recommended gunsmiths for 1911s to do the work?

Ed Brown, Dan Wesson, and Nighthawk offer bobtails as a factory option. I own a CBOB,but Gemini Customs bobtailed a full-size model for me. Any good 1911 'smith should be able to do it for you.

2trans I have a stainless colt that its rolling around in the back of my head to possibly bob someday . However i have never had the opportunity to shoot any bobtail so ill likely hold off till i can fondle one a bit lol . The conversion is simple enough , but irreversible .

I have a Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail that I bought that way, a Smith & Wesson Scandium Commander that I had Bobtailed by Jess Gypin at On Target Custom Gunworks www.ontargetcgw.co and a lightweight Colt Commander XSE, Bobtailed by Wild Alaska at Wild West Guns in Fairbanks, Alaska. All great guns.

Yeah, the customs will cost you. Still, it's an option - here's my Wilson 10mm CQB

Fusion Firearms is building me a 10mm bobtailed Commander sized 1911.

The owner is the previous president of Dan Wesson. I specified the exact gun I wanted made and he's doing a great job.

I expect it will become my regular carry piece.
