Has anyone heard anything about the Bohica Arms 50 BMG Upper? Has anyone fired it? I have a friend that is considering one and was wondering if anyone has fired it or had any experience with one or seen any reviews. Is the recoil manageable? Thanks for your input

I have an upper on order. Use the search function. There is a long thread on this forum as well as on arfcom. there is also a review on Long Range Gun Supply site.

There have been a couple reviews posted on the .50 forum over at AR15.com, Chris the owner posts there also.

I like the idea of the Bohica upper. But as someone not very knowledgeable about the AR platform, I'm curious about how the AR (built originally around a much smaller caliber) holds up to such a big round. Is it that the upper is so massive that the lower is completely unstressed (or close enough) by firing the 50? Is the lower acting pretty much like a barnacle on a cannon? Are any bits of the average AR lower likely to be shaken to smithereens after a few hundred rounds of .50BMG?

Ideally, I'd like to buy SOME variety of .50 before the next [ban/attempt], and this seems like one of the more economical ways to do so. (Another being a Serbu -- not cheap, either.) The Bohica, being an upper, would have remained a legal option under the terms of the previous so-called ban, but the future is hazy.

    Is this a joke?

Are you serious? Someone named their company BOHICA? I can't think of a worse name. We used to use the acronym BOHICA in the military years ago. I still use it now when the occasion demands.

    BOHICA
(Bend Over Here It Come Again)

Very appropriate during tax time, for example.

Well, I think it's an awesome name for a company that makes 50BMGs. It's right up there with Serbu offering to engrave "Have a nice day!" around their muzzles.

Yes, that's the name; there's been a lot of hashing out, and a lot of "Are they serious?!" reactions to it.

Hasn't hurt their business, yet, it seems ;)

Maybe if they named them "POS Kaboom" (but with high quality products), it would drive down the price and the wait list -- sort of like the jam whose name is so sick-making it can't be said on television. ("That's got to be *great* jam!") <-- See SNL sketch "Fluckers," from ... 1976?

Personally, I like that they have a tongue-in-cheek name -- the kind of people who would chuckle at it (knowing its derivation) are probably the kind of people they'd like as customers.

I will post my honest opinion, I would not buy one I would rather get an actual .50 rifle that buy an upper and risk trashing my lower (DISCLAIMER I wrote several of the makers and none of them found any problems yet BUT Armalite and Colt could not say either way for insurance reasons.) If you guys have one and enjoy it kudos, I just don't want one.

About the cheapest "actual" .50 cal rifle is $1000-1500 more than you'll spend setting up a BOHICA. If you're really worried about that, go buy 2 or 3 extra lowers...bet that will last you a lifetime. Lowers are $100 a pop.

.50 uppers have been on the market for around 10 years or so, in the last few years they've become more popular. To this day I haven't heard of anyone having problems with a .50 upper on their AR lower.

If there were any issues with the lowers being damaged they wouldn't have ever made it this far. If you're worried about it you can buy a dedicated lower like the DPMS California lower that has no mag well. ALS and Ferret50 also make their own lowers for their .50 uppers.

As per the other thread they are nice and cheap. Plus Chris is a great guy to deal with.

You really think the owner wasn't fully aware of what BOHICA stands for when he named the company? It's tongue-in-cheek humor, relax.

Like 50 Shooter says, there are thousands of .50 uppers out there and they've been going strong for over a decade. I've not heard a single report of a trashed lower. Even if they trashed lowers every 500 rounds, if you can afford 500 rounds of .50BMG you can certainly afford a new stripped lower at the gun show for $99. Even entry-level dedicated .50s like the Serbu are a good $1000 more than a .50 upper with a complete lower.

All the uppers come with good muzzle brakes, so the recoil isn't really any worse than a beefy "regular" AR, like a .50 Beowulf or a .458 SOCOM or an AR-10 in .300 SAUM.

Will you remember the name and the company from this point forward?
