I'm trying to find books that go into detail on the Colt and Remington conversions during the transition from cap-and-ball to cartridge ammo. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Despite the title, this book also covers Remingtons in detail: A Study of Colt Conversions and Other Percussion Revolvers by R. Bruce McDowell.
Be prepared for sticker shock when you look up this out of print specialist book. Worth the money if you're seriously interested.

McDowell's book is the best for study, it's like a textbook filled with every detail you can imagine. It is also decidedly lacking in inspiring imagery. Dennis Adler's books are a good overview but have lots of color pics that fan the flames of imagination. McDowell's book is well out of print and often carries a lofty price tag but it pays to shop around. It was nearly $300 when I added it to my Amazon wishlist but I watched it for over a year and finally caught a listing for $70 and ordered it. You can sometimes find a downloadable version online.

That Bay of E (ebay) is a great place to find out of print books. You might me horrified at prices on some of the old gun books, but there is often a "best offer" option. You might find that some of these sellers will be glad to part with a book for some lowball offers.

I have had Dennis Adler's book on cartridge conversions for over 10 years now and consider it a very good starting point. The pictures alone are worth the price.
