The novel is a fast pace, exciting, vivid account of the last enclave of freedom in the human universe and their struggle against the communo-socialist power brokers who seek to enslave them. The main character around which the story swirls, Kendra, is a female from earth who flees to Grainne (the Freehold) to escape a plot to scapegoat her in a typical military/corporate scandal. She is shocked at the unbridled freedom she enounters in her new home but slowly adjusts to her new found liberty. In this story literally everyone on the planet is armed and carries openly and proudly! In the end does our hero go back to Earth and slavery or stay on Grainne and remain free? Does the Freehold remain free or do the forces of tyranny prevail? You'll have to find out for yourself in this page turner! I couldn't put it down.

This is really a great read for any of us "gun nuts" and freedom "nuts". It makes you really wish there was such a place and sad that the America that used to be that place is now gone. I highly reccomend this book. For those of you familiar with keepandbeararms.com the director gets an honorable mention in the book (a starship is named after him). It's cheap too, only about 10.00 including the shipping.

I tried to read Freehold. Nothing more than some guy's girl on girl with guy fantasy in print. Sorry, but it is just not a serious or entertaining work of fiction. On the other hand, if you have no life and are looking for some Pamela Anderson on Selma Hayek action this is the book for you.
 
Well, I'll be finding out if it's good in a couple days. I just bought a copy from him today at the 1500.
 
Hey, it's definately got some of the ansyncronous sex scenes in it but that's not all it's about. If you read the whole book you get a sense of what a truly free society would be like, don't like the sex, skip it, it doesn't make that much of a difference to the story line.

The author could have developed more characters and developed the ones he had better but I thought it was pretty good.

I did warn ya about the sex part! :banghead:

That's about twenty pages in a 500 page book, and that's what registered on you. Hmmm...

You're right. Books with sex scenes are bad. The Bible sucks that way. :rolleyes:

Freehold is a great book, almost two books in one. The first half is a great libertain novel, kind of what L. Neil Smith tried to write, but much, much better. The second half is pure ground pounder warfare. The author is a former air force weenie. I was amazed that a fly boy could write so well about affairs involving mud.

All in all, a great read, unless of course you have issues about sex.
 
I'd say girl on bi-curious girl action is kinky. It's not graphic, but still kinky. But that's way off topic.

I bought this book solely because the author posts on this board. I figured that anyone who can socialize with his readers on a board such as this deserves my money. And so far his idea of a perfect society matches up fairly well with my interpretation of an armed utopia. I look forward to finishing the book. My only real complaint is that I've found a few words that snuck through the editing process. ie. "head" instead of "heard" in the second to last paragraph on page 25. But that's small potatoes. This book ranks right up there with all of the other Baen books I've read.
 
I do have one question for the author?

When are we going to see more? How about a sequel!!! I'll give you an advance order right now!

I think of kinky as how things are done, not who is doing them.

Thanks for the review of the book, I will check it out after I go through a few others.
