That is a great first purchase, and it was the first gun my father bought specifically for me over a decade ago, BB and Pellet dont count! Im only 24 gimmie a break!

I still have her, and still love to shoot her.

Welcome to the wonderful world of firearms... it is wide, varied, cheap and expensive, vastly rewarding and challenging. Good luck and good shooting!

Treat her well, and she'll be around for a lifetime.

Welcome aboard. I think you made a great choice. The 10/22 was my first gun too, and 25 years later, I still use it all of the time. Have fun and be safe. Don't let the "harmless little 22" fool you... it'll kill stuff just the same.

Yes, congratulations!

To answer your question about dry-fire, it is my understanding that repetitive dry-firing of a rimfire gun can damage the firing pin / chamber. Whereas with a centerfire weapon, dry-firing has no ill effects (as the firing pin only protrudes into an empty space and doesn't strike or damage anything), the firing pin of a rimfire weapon is different - it is intended to literally "squash" that soft, explosive brass primer between itself and the rear of the chamber (not sure about nomenclature here?). Therefore, with repeated dry-firing, eventually, either the firing pin will wear down and / or break, or it will peen away at the chamber until there is a dent deep enough that reliable ignition will no longer occur (as the rim of the cartridge can simply move slightly into that dent and avoid the ignition-blow from the firing pin).

Pressing the trigger once after cleaning your gun to take pressure off the hammer spring for storage isn't a big deal, but you should avoid repetitive dry-firing.

Now if you do want to dry-fire your new gun, you could invest in a set of plastic "snap caps" which feed just like real bullets but are inert. The plastic rim of a snap cap would absorb the impact of the firing pin, saving the pin / chamber from undue wear.

Now that I've said all this, it's quite possible that the 10/22 has a design feature that I'm not aware of that would prevent this condition... but this is my understanding, at least :)

BigStick- I was always told not to dry fire a rimfire gun (like a .22LR). But if the manual specifically says it's ok, well then go for it I suppose. Besides, Ruger is known for having some of the best customer service in the industry. So if you break it, they will fix it for you for free anyway. So don't worry.

Hey, and welcome to the group man. It's good to have you here. Honestly, gun folks in my experience, are the best folks there are.

Nice choice. While in general rimfire guns are not safe to dry-fire, the 10/22 is. Ruger designed it that way. I think the ruger LCP isn't safe to dry-fire, but most of their other guns are.:)

And if you are looking for cheap ammo, I reccomend the federal 525 round bulk pack, it's only $15.00. If you are going to use it for self-defense until you can get a better self defense firearm, try a few different brands and types of ammo to see which one is most reliable. But for plinking, you can't beat the federal bulk pack.

congrats and welcome to the ruger family :-D....its your first and most likely not your last :-D

Your first gun is often a gun that stays with you for life. Ruger 10/22 is a great choice.

Hey! We're not twelve steppers. Twelve steppers have a problem, and need help quitting. None of us here has a problem. We can stop buying and shooting any time we want. We just don't want too, that's all. :D

Seriously though, welcome to a brand new lifestyle. It's an AWESOME ride, and it's gonna cost you a LOT of money. :D

Welcome to the club. Guns can be an addiction so watch it. Have fun and do your duty to introduce others to the sport or the new way of thinking.

Howdy! Great choice, both in hobby and in firearm! ;) I still don't have a .22 rifle, even though I have a rifle, a shotgun, and two pistols, but when I do get one, it will be a 10/22.

I've dry-fired my 10/22 thousands of times. If there's a potential problem with it, I haven't found out yet.

But who knows, might be something to it after all, don't want to downplay it too much and then point fingers at me later! :)

It's already been said many times, but.. Congratulations! You made a great first purchase. I grew up shooting my buddies 10/22. Great rifles.

Always remember to be safe and to introduce others to the sport.
