Bowie knife thread

you could make one.....

Easy to say. Not so easy to do. If you've ever handled one you'd understand how difficult it might be to make a knife with a 12-16 inch blade feel weightless in your hand.

my computor just hates your knife i guess..

Not knife, knives. You're missing out on seeing three different big bowies from three different custom makers.

That Wheeler is incredibly pretty, but I still think that Breed is my favorite knife.

Ever.

I actually gave both the Cruiser and the Stryder away, to other troops. I don't want to sound like I'm a saint, or anything- they were both given to me, and I just passed 'em on

A very good deed nevertheless, JS - now if a trooper got the Damascus steel Breed - THEN you'd a Saint. Great pictures all. I'll get a pic of my junk large fixed-bladers this evening to put up against these beautiful high-quality ones - it'll be good for a laugh.

hso, I can't see your pictures (within the thread) either, though I can see all the others. When I click your link, it says "you do not have permission to access that page" - maybe I have to re-login to see....

ahhh, ok, now I see. The top one is just beautiful. The bottom one is nice, but the termites have been after the base of the blade a bit.

PS,

There's the picture of the Wheeler all by itself. It is a sole authorship forged damascus subhilt with stag. Gary said the blade just wanted to be big so he let it. It ended up over a foot long.

Then there's the picture of the Dempsy and the Breed together. The Breed is forged tool steel with stag. The Dempsy is a stock removal knife of 154-CM with maroon micarta.

Not sure what you mean by "termites" though unless you're referring to the "Spanish Notch". In that case the termite had diamond toofers.;)

John has handled the Termite Bowie. John wouldn't you say it's "lively"?

Let me say it again.

That Breed is my no-bull, favorite knife. EVER. It has the incredible, indescribable feeling of some of John Greco's work, which is a spiritual thing. It also wants to move by itself.

It also wants to move by itself.

:D

Yes, it does.

The Dempsey is "heavy". The grip is great, but the knife isn't lively. It has that sharpened bar of steel feel to it. (Yes, I know it is a sharpened bar of steel).

The Wheeler has more mass than the Termite Bowie, but it also is lively.

Kim suggested to Gary that he didn't need to make the bowie a working knife since it was so pretty it would just end up on display, but Gary insisted that he wanted it to be able to do it's job if I had to reach out for something in an emergency. So it's a live blade instead of a safe queen.

What is it about these SF guys and their screwy ideas about even pretty knives working when they need to. ;)

Supposedly they will be put in production by Ka-Bar after the 2009 shot show.

That's good to hear. Ka-Bar is a good fit for them.

According to Ethan Becker they were good sellers at camillus and their demise was more related to Camillus closing their doors.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply that they didn't sell well, just that the military contracts failed to materialize. There are a lot of folks who liked the Becker knives, and they were a pretty good value for how well they were made.

I got a becker necker. I like the knife but hate the bottle opener like none other. The thing rubs on my hand so I've never used mine. I'll probably trade it of give it away for a bday/xmas present when I don't want to buy something. I'm still pissed I didn't buy a Bk7 when I had the chance. I ordered one right as camillus went out of business so they were permanently out of stock where I ordered from. Then I was going to to the Extreme or whatever it was called in s30v but it was sold out at knifecenter so I never did that either. I just hope they bring the BK7 back into production. I don't think I'll buy the base model as it will probably be 1095 and instead get one in D2 or S30v(whatever Kabar feels like making them in if they do make them).

I always meant to get a BK11, but by the time I had money I was willing to spend on it production was shut down and everyone ran out of stock. Guess we both had the same bad luck right after Camillus closed shop.

Got to handle HSO's Wheeler at Blade - moves VERY WELL! If you check the "arm warmers" out you'll notice the spring steel strips - they WILL take a hit. Here's more eye candy.

BK&T Combat Bowie. A very heavy knife, in case I need to lop the head off of a goat or something along those lines.

The Black Bear is a beauty of a knife, and for me fits my hand very well. It is one of the best balanced knives I have ever played with, like an extension of your arm, it is just there.
