Boy Accidentally Shoots Man in Outhouse

VERSHIRE, Vt. (AP) -- A Massachusetts man was shot while using the outhouse at his family's camp by a boy who was target shooting.

Chris Flanagan, 41, of Holliston, Mass., was standing in the outhouse on Saturday morning when he was hit in the chest by a bullet that came through the door.

Police said the shot was fired from a .22-caliber rifle used by a young relative. They declined to give the relationship between the two.

Police were investigating whether the boy, who was not identified because he is a minor, had missed his target or intentionally shot at the outhouse.

Police said the boy was not aware that Flanagan was inside the outhouse.

Flanagan was in fair condition Tuesday at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Are they sure they have the right suspect? They need to eliminate everyone else before they finish up the paperwork and drop the investigation from their caseload. There may have been other movement in the area before the bullet whizzed through the door.

You have to admit that getting shot while in the outhouse is a pretty crappy time to get shot, not that there is a good time.:uhoh:

Rule #4 is: Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

That says nothing about what's in your target. I'm not sure to whom that rule applies -- the shooter or the shoer.

And now, for The Untold Story

Seems the boy was just jealous . . . :D

Outhouse 'Peeping Tom' Gets Plea Deal

CONWAY, N.H. — A man who said he was only looking for his wedding ring after police found him in the sewage tank of an outhouse has pleaded no contest to criminal trespass and will receive psychiatric treatment.

Gary Moody, 45, was arrested in June after a teenage girl noticed him looking at her from the depths of a toilet seat in an outhouse at Lower Falls in the White Mountain National Forest. In court documents, police reported that Moody insisted he was not doing anything wrong and had gone into the sewage tank to retrieve a wedding ring he had accidentally dropped while changing clothes.

Moody pleaded no contest on Oct. 25 and was fined $1,000. He also was ordered to pay $700 in restitution to the U.S. Forest Service and stay off national forest lands for two years. Moody was also sentenced to 30 days in the Carroll County House of Correction, a punishment that would be suspended after two years of good behavior.

"Anyone who was in the ladies' toilet is a victim and females at large are victims and they have heightened scrutiny for fear of what they may find there," Carroll County District Judge Pamela Albee said. "I think Mr. Moody requires treatment."

Police said they examined the sewage and did not find a wedding ring. Moody, Herbert wrote, said he lowered himself directly through the toilet opening to search for the ring and tried to hide out of embarrassment when he heard someone enter the outhouse.

County law enforcement officials said they do not know how long Moody was in the sewage tank but they had to decontaminate him before his formal arrest.

In California, it is a criminal act to discharge a firearm within 150 yards of an occupied building -- particularly TOWARDS the building. (For some reason it's not a crime to discharge a .300 Wby as long as you're over 150 yards away; small comfort if you've ever shot one of those things.)

So, here the kid would be charged with a crime. His only possible defense was that the door handle did not function properly, so he didn't know it was "Occupied."
