Okay, here goes-My only exp w/BP is 1851 Confederate Colt repro-Cabelas.Also 4"screw off bbl derringer I'ask about later.Ques today is what about BP shotguns?I'm a double bbl nut-have 1 of ea ga.Am interested in geting a 12ga BP.I've seen them in Cabela's,but nowhere else.Read a story in Gray's SJ once.Fellow shot quail ,but didn't see it fall for the smoke cloud. Is it really that bad?Sounds dumb, but how do you keep the shot in the bbl?Are there any break action ones that use BP shells?I've read about metal hulled shells.Any info?

Please try to type so it's easier to read.:)

You can use BP shells in whatever break-action shotgun you want. Buy a new Beretta, and you can use BP in it if that's your fancy.

WRT muzzleloaders, you load the powder, ram in a wad, pour in the shot, ram in an over-shot card to keep the shot in.:)

You can use fiber wads, or plastic wads, just like in paper or plastic shotshells. These are the plastic wads and fiber over-shot cards Cabela's sells for their (Pedersoli) shotguns:

They also sell a starter package with the shotgun and other stuff you'll need to start shooting, including the above:

Regarding the question of smoke obscuring your target, I have found that conditions of high humidity can greatly exacerbate the "problem".:D In addition, wind direction and velocity can either help or hinder your view and yes, sometimes you do lose sight of your quarry. Since we can't control any of these factors in the field, why worry about them? Just go out and enjoy your time with your shotgun.

Speaking for myself alone, hunting on a beautiful, crisp day with a double-barreled muzzle loading shotgun is about as good as it gets.:):):)

Best of luck to you!

Careful, there is some lure to double barrels, I dont quite understand it myself but I have the addiction.

Careful, some can get quite expensive.

I own 3 sxs muzzleloading shotguns: one Pedersoli,

one Pietta

and one CVA I built from a kit. All are 12 gauge.

Loads vary according to the target, of course. I don't use any plastic components or synthetic powders. A typical load is 70 grains by volume of ffg Goex, then an 1/8" thick overpowder card, followed by a 1/2" thick lubed fiber cushion wad, 1 1/4 ozs by volume of No. 7 lead shot and finally a .025" thick overshot card. The cushion wad is to keep the shot column intact in the barrel and it's lubed to keep the bp fouling soft.

Each of the cards/wads are available separately in bags of 500 or 1000 from several internet retail suppliers, Cabelas included.

This might help detail the process.

However you can skip the felt wad and just use a wad punch to make the over powder and over shop wads out of cardboard.

Also you can soak the fiber wads in stuff like crisco and tear them in 1/3's for use that way and skip the over powder wad. Esp useful for hunting and in bad weather.

FYI this is a wad punch I use for 20 gauge.

shotguns

I have a 20ga pedersoli,and a 10ga.For the 20 use a 45-70 case and load equal volumes of powder and shot,10ga use 1 1/4 oz measure.There is a fine article by V.M. Star,aka Mr Shotgun on the dos and don'ts of muzzleloaders.
For shotgun wads[fiber],I've been using 1000+ and olive oil[sweet oil]at 50/50,coating the wads but not soaking to the point of saturation.
Keep nipples clean and dry, when hunting use the hottest cap you have,ie cci magnum [my choice].I even charge the nipples with a nipple charger[fffg],positive ignition is the goal, and then you can play with shot wt and wads if you don't like the pattern.
I also shoot an 1886 model hammerless Elsie[lcsmith] with black powder loads.Plastic hulls can be used about twice before burning holes in the hulls,Recycling freebies [cheap] from the trap clubs work well here.I cut off the crimp and use cards and felt wads. Plastic wads Especially trap wads will leave plastic in your barrels unless you use a card under plastic.
I'm making my shot with a littleton shotmaker, from wheel weights [while they last].Good luck
