Do you think we could put a petition together for wanting glossy scopes back on the market and would it do any good?

I did find one Leupold scope on the market that is glossy black. It is the 4x32 rimfire scope. Bushnell had none. I think I’ve looked for Nikon before and found none.

My Weatherby Mark V needs a new scope. All I have found that I can afford are matte. :barf:

Stay safe.

A petition isn't the right approach. Manufacturers don't make stuff they can't sell. You could probably contact a retailer such as Cabela's or Midway and try to convince them to order a special run from Leupold or another manufacturer. I'd bet any scope manufacturer would need a commitment to sell a minimum amount, around 500 would be my guess, in order for it to be profitable to them.

Ruger does this a lot and Smith & Wesson has in the past. If a distributor will place a large enough order they make some quirky things for the handful of guys who want them.

I'd totally sign a petition to get gloss as an option, but I'd expect it to get ignored.

As JMR said you'd be better off talking to a distributor, or asking leupy very nicely if they would let you set up a group buy, and if so how many units you would need to move for them to do a run.....course it would probably all have to be the same scope.

What do Ruger and SW make and for who normally?

Leupold's custom shop will make the color/finish you order. It appears their shop is closed at the moment, but it was open as recently as the holiday season and will probably reopen soon. You can get a hint at the kind of things they offer from a 3rd party page: https://www.tactical-store.com/leupold-riflescope-custom-shop.html

You do not need to order quantity to get customized Leupold scopes. They offer numerous customizations from color, to texture, engraving, 24k gold, and custom reticles and turrets, all for one-offs.

A petition will do absolutely nothing to entice a capitalist manufacturer. They already have FAR, FAR more balanced and broad reaching market analytics data in their hands, which is why they stopped making them in the first place. “People” don’t buy gloss scopes, whether because of the added finish cost, or because it doesn’t match the standard matte finish on common rifles of this era, or because they think the glare might spook game - “people,” as in the majority of a target market for these manufacturers, don’t buy gloss scopes. They already know a small, unsustainable percentage of “people” do want gloss scopes, but pandering to a niche group instead of a broad market is a great way to lose your business, especially in this modern era of internationally competitive retail capitalism.

What might move the needle, however, to get glossy scopes in the hands of folks which want them, is to organize a negotiated group buy with a manufacturer. You’d be locked into a very limited brand and model selection for the entire group, but it has been demonstrated that a critical mass, group buy can be successful in procuring otherwise unavailable items.

Leopold used to offer gloss bodies as an option through their custom shop, but I noticed recently that they've shut the Custom Shop down - does anyone one why/when/if it might return?

Ruger has a long standing program of “distributor exclusives.” Talo industries, Lispeys, Davidson’s, Sports South, Buckeye Sports, Baumler & Crow Shooting Supply, Big Rock Sports, RSR Group, Bangers, United Sporting, Cabela’s, and I’m certain many others have contracted distributor exclusive production runs from Ruger.

Some of these are fully completed by Ruger under contract, others are shipped as semi-complete for later finish work like engraving, cerakote, etc. done by or further subcontracted by the distributor. Distributor Exclusive models have been offered for most if not all of the Ruger model lines (don’t recall seeing an Exclusive Wrangler yet?) - even if it’s something tiny like a Talo exclusive offering of a Super Redhawk with everything standard except a hi-viz fiber optic front sight, or a certain chambering or barrel length, like a 7.5” 45colt Blackhawk. These exclusives are listed in the Ruger catalog and on the website. Most of the “special models” you see from Ruger, like the Toklat, Kodiak Backpacker, color framed LCR’s, camo or colored stocks, Anniversary or commemorative models, Flattops, two tones, convertibles, etc are all distributor exclusives. At least in the first runs - some do become standard Ruger offerings in success. Meaning these distributors, not Ruger, take on the risk of ordering a large volume of something relatively unique, and subsequently take on the burden of selling them.

I don’t care if glossy scopes come back or not but I voted I would sign a petition to those who want them. Don’t think it will do any good though

If I remember correctly the Leupold Custom Shop was shut down long before the holidays. It’s been shut down so long now I doubt it will ever re-open.

They went away for a reason---not likely to come back unless a bunch of guys have the desire to get a shiny new Model 700 BDL with white line spacers----I'd say, probably not going to happen.

Hey, I resemble that remark! My 700 BDL is presently wearing a matte scope and it just doesn't look right.

The reason they went away is that its more expensive to produce a gloss finish than matte. Jack up the price $50 or $75 for the exact same scope and the group clamoring for gloss gets a lot smaller.

I have a Winchester Model 70 XTR Featherweight in .257 Roberts that was my first rifle. It had a 6x Leupold glossy scope on it. I foolishly traded the scope to my brother back in `98 for some work on a pickup. I recently decided to get a new scope for it and couldn't believe that no one makes glossy scopes anymore. Been searching Ebay for a good deal on an old Leupold and the prices I've seen have been discouraging. I may have to just bribe my brother into selling it back to me.

I'm sure a petition could be developed but I'm equally sure that it wouldn't do any good. :)

Here's some glossy scope porn for encouragement while you draft the petition. :D It's one that happened to have been on a 22 Rimfire that I bought recently. :)

They'll have to bring back glossy rifles first. For me, matte goes with everything but a glossy scope has to go on a gloss blued rifle.

They took the Camaro out for a while too. I think glossy scopes will be back at some point, or at least on retro vintage series that may run time from time.
What gets me is that I think the manufacturers of scopes decided to limit the amount of glossy scopes to change the desire of of them. I’ve worked in a gun store. Customers usually choose what is on display. No glossy to choose from turns into no desire for them. There are still nice rifles with high luster bluing.

Weaver did a run of polished and blued steel scopes a while back. Modern optical quality in a traditional package, and if they werent something like 500 bucks I probably would have bought one.
