browning 1886 saddle ring carbine 45-70

Hey guys, was just wondering about this rifle.

a few have popped up on gun broker.

I have always wanted a 45-70, but I am not sure I like the 1895 that much...

Is this a strong action or should it be relegated to standard 405 grain remingtons?

How many rounds will the mag tube hold? I am assuming they are a 20 inch barrel. Do they shoot lead rounds well?

Any other thoughts?

It is the same pressure rating as the Marlin 1895, look in a good load manual and you will see it grouped in the middle pressure class. I helped a friend do load development with cast bullets in his Browning 1886 using the Lyman 330 gr. Hollow point. Once he got it, it was used on deer and elk, worked well.

They are very nice rifles, loads for 45-70 are listed for originals, modern lever rifles (like this one) and modern single shots. So as the previous poster mentioned use the intermediate loads. Personally I prefer the rifle length but if you like carbines it is a fine one.

I have an Browning M86 Saddle Ring Carbine. (No Lawyer safety)
The only thing I dislike is the rear sight is not worth the powder to blow it to *****

I have loaded it hotter than needed until it about shock the filling out of my teeth.

So I load it now at a more reasonable level.

Using Remington 405 grain jacketed soft point, bulk bullets:

50.0 Grains IMR 3031, CCI-200 primer, WW-brass, 2.545 COL.
= 1,665 fps and a 1 inch group at 100 yards.

54.0 grains IMR 4064, CCI-250 primer, WW brass, 2.545 col
= 1,770 fps and a 1.5 inch group

44.0 grains Reloader 7, CCI-250, WW brass, 2.545 col
= 1,760 fps and a 1.5 inch group.


I also have loaded up a bunch of 350 grain hard cast slugs, but have not chronographed them yet.

The Browning 1886 SRC actually has a 22" barrel, the magazine holds 7 rounds of 45-70 plus 1 in the tube. The modern 1886 is a very strong design and can handle level two loads easily. The fit and finish on these carbines are as nice as any I have handled. I love mine, hope you can get one I'm sure you will enjoy that carbine.

How does the "Extra Lightweight" 1886 carbine differ from the one(s) under discussion? It also has a 22" barrel.

It has a shortened magazine tube, does not use barrel bands, it has a cap at the end of the fore stock, no saddle ring and it has more of a rifle type stock.
Winchester has/is making a reproduction with a tang safety and rebounding hammer.

I couldn't be happier withn mine, shoots great, great finish.
I've shot Rem. 405ers at 1880 fps, those things turn into a big ol' ball of lead at that speed. I wouldn't think twice about using it on ANY game in North America. Great accuracy, I once flipped up the ladder sight, aimed at the 12" gong at 250 yds...hit it on the first try ! Still consider it a favorite. Check out data for it on http://www.realguns.com
