Browning BOSS Yes or No ?

What are your thoughts on the BOSS system do you think it works or not. Also does it work better on the Bolt action or the BAR.

It works as advertised but it is an ear buster. Not really worth it in my opinion.

I had a .300 Win Mag A-Bolt with the boss on it. The boss did exactly what it's supposed to do... but holy cow was it loud. Even with earplugs in that thing was painful.

My buddy's got a 30.06 A-bolt with the boss... he says it definitely works. Considering he hasn't missed anything in the past 5 years, I'll have to believe him.

As for the sound, it's never bothered me with ear plugs even when I'm right on the side of him. Come to think of it, I don't remember experiencing any terrible ringing after we got into a mess of wild hogs a while back (without earplugs), but that could have just been the adrenaline.

Edit: So an answer to your question, yes if you plan on making some really impressive groups. However, if you're planning on just using it for hunting, I'd trust a browning any day without a boss.

I'll ALWAYS buy the BOSS when it is available.

I'll also purchase the C.R. piece to replace the BOSS when I'm actually using the rifle for hunting.

If you have ever been a spotter for a benchrest competition you will never really like any type of muzzle brake.

I have always passed on the BOSS. Maybe it does work as advertised. If I did get one I'd get the CR sleeve. I don't care for the looks. As far as having a bit more accuracy with one, I can't see that being an issue for hunting. When it comes to 'shots on game' many other little factors come into play that are of a higher collective importance than a BOSS.

If you and your fellow shooters intend to always wear hearing protection (even in the field) and you don't mind dirty looks from most people at the local range, go for it. Generally, muzzle brakes are loud enough to damage your hearing permanently the first time, and every time thereafter, they are fired without hearing protection.

Non-brake Boss? Yes. Regular Boss? No way.

the BOSS works plain and simple. As a shooter behind the rifle I don't happen to think muzzle blast is all that bad, anywhere OTHER than directly behind the rifle it's quite a bit more noisy

I have a 30-06 a-bolt

very accurate, i shoot golf balls at 100yds with it
but i never use the boss for hunting too loud
the CR goes hunting

I got my dad's 25-06 with the boss when he passed. It worked well for him and myself.

I have the BOSS on my A-Bolt Eclipse in 30.06, I love it.

John L. Plaster, a retired army sniper, commented in his book that the BOSS system does indeed work. The non-brake system is preferred because the brake version is so incredibly loud.

Barrel tuning for accuracy is pretty much a proven setup.

my 300wsm boss is the best gun I have thats bigger than a 243. little recoil very accurate when tuned. Yes it is loud as hell but with ear plugs its softer that a 222 without ear plugs.

The BOSS works well on bolt and autos. I have owned a couple of BOSS guns ove the years and ended up putting the CR ($25) instead of the brake version on. It will make you deaf if you try hunting in a blind with the brake on.
