This weekend a few of us THR/Sigforum members attended Bruce Gray's Competition Fundamentals Class. (Contact: [email protected] )This has been my first shooting class. I've been shooting various guns from paintball, airsoft and pellets guns since I was a child growing up. I've been into handguns for the last three years and no one has ever really taught me how to "shoot". It was a self learned process of deciding Weaver or Isocoles and lining up the sights.
I'm a left eye shooting with right hand dominance and Bruce helped me redirect my efforts toward what he felt was my dominant eye. This was amazing because my eye doctor could not even figure out which eye was dominant.
The class was awesome. It consisted of students with various backgrounds, some of which had no experience to weekend IPSC shooters. We all left the class with something new.
We started off with BASIC SAFETY as Bruce never assumes that everyone understands those basic and really stressed each rule which then lead to talking about shooting technique. Each of us were given handouts and were allowed to ask questions during the lecture. We spent the greater part of the morning with lectures and the rest of the afternoon learning how to use a trigger. At the end of the day everyone was able to strike the "A" zone on their targets from 25 yards out. One of the students there had maybe shot a total of 300 rounds in his lifetime was able to get the majority of his shots in the A from 7-25 yards.
After learning how to use the trigger we spent the rest of the day learning drills. FirearmsFan and I left feeling very humble. Each of us have owned a firearm for more then 3 years and this has been the first class that we have taken. If I were to do it all again, I would have bought my first Sig and spent the money of training. We've litereally thrown 1Ks of rounds down range so we could practive and improve but thats all useless if you dont get the proper training.
