It all depends on the reason for buying a pistol.

Alexanders in north GA has the S&W SD9VE for 199.00 and I picked up 7 mags at surplus store for my sd40 for 10.00 ea recently. If he doesn't like the trigger get an Apex kit for about 25.00, everyone that shoots mine likes it.

    -Ruger SR Series/American Series/Security 9
    -Springfield XD
    -CZ P-10
-CZ P-07/P-09 (if he can push it to around $420)
    -S&W M&P Series

Kahr CW series, or as someone mentioned, a used Glock. I handeled a friend's Canick, and I liked it... just haven't fired it... yet.

@horsemen61: We need more information. What is the intended purpose of this gun? The EC9s is a fantastic budget subcompact carry gun, but less than ideal for a dedicated home defense gun. And it’s not a good target/range gun.

Go to a LGS or pawnshop and try some out within your price range. I would see how the pistol field strips , had very hard time with narrow take down plate on SD9VE.

This is a good point. I assumed we were talking nightstand/range gun since carry wasn't mentioned. If carry is a consideration, that would change things a bit.

I can recommend a TriStar (Canik) S-120, a Turkish made CZ 75 clone. I just bought one a couple of weeks ago. Under $400.

    M&P9 2.0 under 350 new.

or for concealed carry. A shield for 250 and the rest spend on a good holtser and ammo

Friends, a local gun shop that has a few location has brand new Italian Beretta 92FS for $429.00 plus whatever shipping. Despite what their site says they had them at that price at a show last weekend and in store for that price still available full size or compact, So for a little more than $400 it is a classic quality 9mm , I am seriously thinking about getting ANOTHER one just because even though I REALLY REALLY shouldn't given my credit card statement lol.

I like mine, though it takes practice to shoot it well. Be mindful of the feedramp. I just had to polish mine as I started having FTFs. The gun has at least 1.5K rounds through it, mostly 124gr. FMJ. A compact weapon which is especially "flat". I think your friend will find it an excellent defensive weapon out to 20 to 30 feet.

Is he okay with spending the full $400 or would he rather spend something like $300 instead?

    Good 9's under 400 are:

    Ruger SR9/9E
    Taurus PT92
    Springfield XD's
Zastava M70 or M88 (dunno how these will feed hollow points, but for about $300, these are great budget steel frame single stack single action 9mm's.)
    SCCY.

I'm not a big fan of the SCCY, I don't like the triggers, but for $200 they're not bad.

The one budget 9 I would advise he avoid is the Hi Point as there are better 9mm's for the money. The yet to be released YC9 Hi Point's tho... those are a total redesign of the Hi Point and will be about $200 but have better mags with higher capacities.

I have the EC9s, paid $209 for it, the wife got one for herself then I bought one for a daughter. They have pretty good triggers and have been reliable and quite accurate for what they are. I removed the magazine safety, put on a Hogue hand-all grip sleeve and added a clip-draw and it's my edc.
