I use a Mossberg 590 for HD and really feel like it needs a light to differentiate a threat from a family member stumbling home late at night.

I currently own a Streamlight TLR-1 which has proven to be a great value and I mainly use it on my CZ-75 SP-01 and Glock 19 rails. This is more durable than I need for this application but if a mounting system and remote switch is sold, it could be a great option.

I also purchased a Streamlight 3N for general emergency use to keep in my car. Not sure if this might work in a universal mounting system or if it is compatible with remote switches.

The Surefire foreend and Surefire lights are generally out of my price range. If I could somehow mount the TLR-1 or even a cheaper ($20-$60 not including remote switch/mount) flashlight on the 590, this would be ideal.

Any suggestions? Could I somehow make use of the bayonet lug on the 590? Is there a universal light mount that I could attach a cheap(er) light such as a mini-maglight with remote switch? I'm not incredibly worried about the light surviving multiple 12ga discharges as I'm not clearing any houses - I simply need to identify a threat and if such threat exists, I probably won't be shooting much more than once.

Clifs Notes:
1. I am on a budget; Surefire lights and foreend systems are not affordable.
2a. I don't need a super-durable light - I only need the light to survive as long as I can ID the threat. Something like a mag-light would be just fine.
2b. I need to be able to use a remote pressure switch on the light as I do not want to remove my hand from the foreend to turn the light on and off. This limits my choice of cheaper/generic lights.

Any suggestions for a cheap light (or reuse of one of my existing lights) with remote switch and a mounting system? Perhaps the bayonet lug could be utilized?

Remember, I am not on a SWAT team nor clearing houses. I don't need anything "tactical" but rather practical and a good value.

Use your TLR-1, get a picatinnty rail and mount it to either your receiver (if you don't have ghost rings) or mount it to the forearm.

So this is the gun I plan to mount it on if that helps at all:

I like the tri-rail mount. I will contact the company to see if it will fit my 590 seeing as my mag-tube extends all the way to the end of the barrel...although ideally I want it as close to the forearm (that's what you call the pump-hand-grip, right?)

M2 - I like the way you mounted your setup so close to the pump-grip but your CTD link doesn't work. Do you have an item number or a better link?

Smitty - I also like your ideas. Where did you get your rail and how does it attach? How would I attach it to the forearm (if I am correct in believing that is the term for the pump-hand-grip)? I can't picture this. Also, while I don't have ghost rings, if I mounted it to the receiver, wouldn't it be terrible awkward to operate and also block my view of the front bead sight? Not sure I quite understand this idea but I'm looking for all options.

thanks

My solution - Budget light on 590 / TLR-1

Here is my solution to a budget light on a 590.
Streamlight TLR-1 mounted with a Streamlight 69901 mount.

Ultra-cheap solution to a light mount for Mossberg 590

2.75-inch Flashlight and Laser Universal Gun Mount
DealExtreme website.

Price: $5.22 with free shipping

Works fantastic mounted on my M590A1 barrel with some paracord tightly wrapped around barrel to protect barrel finish.
I use a Fenix LD20 180 lumens Torch (though any standard flashlight will probably work, like a basic Mag-Lite) and the soft rubber activation button on the Fenix light falls directly where my left thumb is (mounted left side at end of barrel) while holding the shotgun's fore end pump handle.
Easy to activate with no pressure switch needed.
Light also includes rapid-pulsating, blinding strobe feature.
Mount is super strong machined steel and is an awesome deal on a budget!
Highly Recommended!
I may post pics real soon, especially if interest is expressed in seeing my particular setup.
Thanx for reading.

Tri-rail in use

Here is the Laser-lyte tri-rail on a Mossberg 500 with a Streamlight Scorpion in a scope ring and a tri-rail on a Hawk 982 (870 clone) with a Streamlight TRL1. The Scorpion can be activated to the index finger or knuckle, the TRL1 by the index finger. You do not need to alter your nomal grip on the forend for either light.

Check out this thread for a very bright light at an inexpensive price:

Here's Jimdo's website:

http://www.solarforce-usa.com/main.sc

You can get a 300 lumen LED light with batteries for $34.90 (free shipping) - it would be a challenge to find a brighter light at a less expensive price. Jimdo's site also list pressure tape switches and mounts under "accessories".

As for "budget mounting options":

This is my current setup, hangs a tad lower than I'd prefer - but other than that it's perfect. The setup is rock solid, blindingly bright, and the way the tail cap is situated you can turn the light on/off while still keeping your hand on the slide.

I use different barrels on the same receiver for my 500, one for HD and the other for trap/hunting. Being able to twist the tail cap off to safety means I won't accidentally turn the light on during trap and not notice in the bright of the day.

Before this I had a TLR-1 on a streamlight picatinny mount that also worked great, but was more of a hassle to turn on/off - and wasn't quite as bright.

Just got my $27 LaserLyte mount and $38 UTG Defender light from Amazon.com mounted to my Mossberg 500.
