I'd like to buy (not in any terrible rush) several hundred rounds of .308 or 7.62x51 FMJ in the 145-150gr weight range for my Ruger GSR.

Any suggestions of brands that are reasonably accurate (for bulk), and reliable? I know I'll have to try it in my rifle to see how it works for me, but I figure if I can narrow it down somewhat (via the experience of THR members), that'll be helpful.

Lots of the surplus and new-made to "M80" ball standard is good, some as bad. Avoid Indian, avoid Russian.

Lately I've gotten surplus Hirtenberger that is very good, but it comes in spurts so may not be around. Saltech is new made Swiss and is what you'd expect for new made Swiss anything. Very good.

Search on GunBroker and see what pops up. If unfamiliar with a brand just ask here.

I have had good luck with Federal XM80. For bulk ammo it is pretty darn accurate in my AR and M14 rifles. I then end up with the Lake City Brass for reloading. I bought a bunch when it was 10 bucks a box before the BS hit...

    Another vote for LC XM80

Also both German manufacturers, Hirtenberger 7.62×51 or MEN 7.62×51 are good when you can find them.

My brother made the mistake of using milsurp ammo on a deer hunting trip a few years ago. Ended up having to track the deer for quite a distance. Same year he used it on a hog hunt and the hogs weren't dropping like they should. Great ammo for plinking if it is NATO , personally would not use it for hunting. Brother still loves it.

I’m a real big fan of Prvi white box… most of my .308 factory stash is Prvi. It’s also boxer primed, and the brass is good quality. I’m pretty much done with the Federal/ATK M80 type ammo, I’ve had enough issues with it I quit buying it. I don’t know if that will change now that Winchester is running LC.

Not being in a terrible rush is a good idea -- who knows what you'll be able to actually find right now, let alone what it will cost!

I stocked up M80 spec for my rebarrelled M1 Garand during Trump's second year, when both supplies and prices were pretty good locally. Mostly Privi and Fiocchi, some Federal. Back then it was available in bulk-priced 200- or 300-round lots.

Like Wronghanded, I like a stash of factory ammos for some of my rifles, including .308. I handload for accuracy, but my factory ammo is for blasting... and a good source of more brass, when it comes down to that. I don't expect to find the potential of me or my rifle shooting any FMJ ammos, even my own.

Was literally just talking to a friend about his LMT MWS rifles and he says they really like the MEN 147.

Asked the buddy with the MWS how far he's shot the MEN 147 and he said 750 yards regularly and had had some success "lobbing then out to 1000".

I'll vouch for MEN as well.

If you have done your CMP paperwork, Creedmoor Sports Ammo is good to go, and then some. All of their ammo has performed very well for me. Not sure you want to stock up on match grade, though.

Of course if you can wait, you will save some money. I was getting MEN pretty reliably for .50-60 a round before the silliness.

I'm a big fan of Privi Partizan and Sellier and Bellot ammo. I like how they are usually a bit cheaper than Winchester M80 but still as good of quality. I have noticed that it seems the hunting ammo like federal soft point 150gr is only a few dollars more a box if not the same price as Winchester M80 at Cabela's and Academy in Oklahoma City. The seller and Bellot 147gr fmj stuff is about a buck a round on GunBroker before shipping right now. I recommend getting a few boxes of some hunting ammo and a few boxes of match ammo and keeping those for "emergency use" so you will always have at least a couple hundred rounds in case shtf. And then use your fmj ammo for plinking and practicing. If you reload, you can make whatever type of ammo you want really, anything from 110gr varmint ammo to 220gr match ammo. I'd recommend a 30-06 or 300WM for the heavier bullets for optimum velocity but they will still work in a 308.

I've bought NATO M80 ball surplus that comes in brown cardboard boxes at a gun show. Sorry, but I don't have a pic since I shot it all gone this past weekend. And it shot just fine. But if you have a chance to visit a gun show where you live you might find some there ...

One thing to keep in mind is whenever I buy bulk I try to but something thing with good quality brass I can reload. I have always done this with 5.56 and now that I got myself a .308 this year I will be doing the same.

It has saved me so much money allowed me to shoot so much more due to the lower cost of reloading yourself.

I will second the above linked ammo.

    Quite accurate for FMJ ammo.
