I'm just dipping my toe into the waters of bullet casting and would like to know how fast you can push cast bullets from a lever action without the problems associated with leading.
I've got a 310 grain semi wadcutter in .45 Colt that I'm going to be loading for a 1892 Rossi. It's not a gas check design so I'm thinking I should keep velocitys pretty low. Does the quality of the lube have a huge difference on how fast?
thanks

Go to castboolits.com for lots ofcasting info. Good group of guys. I use Lee Liquid Alox lube right now with minimal leading in my 38, but there are lots and lots of lube choices.

As longs as they're sized correctly, I'd say .001 over bore size, a good alloy used-I like WW with 2% tin added, and lubed with a good lube, I like NRA 50/50, you should be able to load them as hot as is safe for that rifle. I doubt you'd be able to get them over the velocities which require a gas check from that heavy a pill in a pistol caliber. Think about those heavy cast loads for the 45/70 gov! Good luck and welcome to world of casting.

I used a bottle of Lee's Alox mixed with a pound of Bee's Wax & haven't had a bit of leading in either my .44 mag nor any of my .45's (ACP or 45LC).
For lead, I use wheel weights only dropped into water for all my loads. That hardens them by dropping them into water.
