Bullet aimed at track security guard lodges in belt

NEW ORLEANS A security guard at the New Orleans Fair Grounds escaped serious injury when a man trying to rob an armored car fired a bullet that lodged in the guard's gun belt.

The guard suffered only a bruise and the gunman escaped.

Fair Grounds president Bryan Krantz says the gun belt basically acted as a bulletproof vest. Krantz also called the near miss a "miracle."

A Loomis Fargo and Company armored car arrived shortly before 3:30 yesterday afternoon to pick up deposits from an off-track betting parlor. One of the Loomis guards went in, and was being escorted out with the deposits by the track security guard.

Police say a man in a red car drove up and without getting out of the car, he pointed a gun at both men and demanded the deposits.

When the armored security guard quickly retreated with the money into the armored truck, the robber fired at the security guard.

The robbery attempt happened so quickly that neither the armored car guard nor the track guard unholstered their guns.

FWIW, I believe at one time Rich Davis / Second Chance prototyped a "bulletproof" belt and holster, but I dont think it ever got produced.

There is a lot of vital stuff below the belt. I wouldn't mind having a bullet proof belt if it covered a little lower then just the belt.

yea, like the pelvis. Alot of people talk about double-taps, head shots, center mass...but a shot to the pelvis can be a real one-shot-stopper, since even a bg hopped up on stuff can't get far with a shattered pelvis.
Bullet proof vests should consider this, by having lower flexible portions that cover the pelvis....but its pretty much ignored.

never try to shoot a guy in kentucky then! it seems the big trend around here, are those belt buckles that DO look like WWF belts.
