I agree, the story is nonsense. Every time ammo prices spike there is a “buy ammo now” thread wanting people to pay $6 a box for ammo that was $1.50 a box 3 years ago

Just curious, could you please inform us of what states have limits on ammo possession?

Do any of you people making the "tin foil" jokes really think those guys aren't going to make a move when it suits them? I'll keep my tin foil hat on, you guys keep your heads in the sand.
Dude, that's not just a hat, that's a full-face helmet!

Oh yeah, I got jokes....

...the 5.56 is a military round, made to different specs, with much higher pressures. 223 is the civilian version, made with lower pressures and usually different bullets. so, while production of 223 rounds could be converted to 5.56 very easily, the only reason for doing that would be if there was an upcoming invasion of some military opperation. hopefully, that is not going to happen...
The "NATO" round is almost but not quite the same as Winchester .308 in the same way as 5.56 is almost the same as .223 Remington. Different headspace and brass thicknesses in the two military varieties, and some rifles (i.e., Armalite) can fire both while most can not.
We may very well be facing an ammunition crisis of the politically-created kind, wherein some other central-planning committee decides to revisit the "Assault Weapons" ban or similar idiocy.

If you need to get lied to, go to a gun show, and listen to the folks trying to sell you something. Don't believe a word of what they say.

You got that right. After the last gun show here there were 6 guys who got a "deal" that ended up as a "pig-inna-poke". :scrutiny:

I've been seeing ammo prices drop, not increase, at least when buying online. Retail stores like Bass Pro keep ripping me off with $10/box + tax. I bought some Federal XM193 last night for $7/box on natchez.

I've been going to gun shows for the past 25 years, and I have seen these guys make their dire predictions time and time again. I have learned to take their warning with a grain of salt. That is not to say prices don't increase, but they do so at predictable intervals when the market can support new price levels.

Overall, prices do increase, but if you chart the prices on a graph, there are peaks and valleys. When no-military-experience-Clinton got into office, prices rose. Prices went up in the 89 and 94 bans.

To be fair, the cost of doing business is expensive, and they have costs to bear. The thing is, these guys hawking the ammo at the shows are there to sell, and they want to sell more to get by. Competition is brutal, and the consumer is fickle. The only way to make a real profit is long term survival (this applies to any business). I notice that they will seize every opportunity to create a sense of scarcity to induce you to buy more. Tying current events to the supply and demand has been an effective strategy in the past,

The problem is, they keep recycling the same theme over and over again. Not very original. If I am gonna pay four bucks a gallon of gas and 8 bucks for a ticket, I'd at least like to be entertained with a greater variety of BS stories! :)

Prices will eventually go up, but it happens over time when markets can support new price levels.

I would expect to see ammo prices decrease substantially as the value of the raw materials are and will continue to tank due to the market downturn. Copper is at nearly 3 year lows as of late, and lead is getting there as well.

The only real impact we could potentially see on the political end are draconian bans on the importation and sale of foreign ammunition or outright bans of certain kinds of ammunition. I don't see this happening unless crime substantially increases as these bans typically happen when crime is a major issue on a national level.

I think crime is on the increase. I know it is in the area I live in so I'm guessing it probably is nationwide. Crimes of aggravated violence seems to be replacing the usual non-violent crimes around here anyway.

I would also guess with the economy getting tanked and unemployment increasing breeds the more violent crimes.

But IS crime really increasing on a national level? Apart from you anecdotal evidence, I've yet to see anything that shows this is actually the case.

The last two cycles of crime waves in America were due in major part to the drug wars of the 80s and early 90s, not necessarily the creation of poverty by an economic recession.

I think it is a much greater chance that a new AWB would come into the fold from a string of school shootings than anything else.

Lead and copper prices have TANKED in the past few months, but ammo hasn't come down a penny yet. Hopefully it will start to.

No reason for it as long as people are buying it like crazy at the current prices.

Copper and Lead Prices have dropped ~35% since a few months ago and are only now returning to 3 year lows, further I would suspect that most ammunition sellers are running FIFO inventory systems. It's not going to be like gasoline where we see a change in the prices at the pump the same week oil prices fall, it will take months for lower raw material prices to hit the manufacturers.

No car seller will EVER tell you NOW isn't the time to buy. No insurance seller will ever tell you that next month, when you get paid again will be just fine. No seller of any commodity will ever tell you it's ok to walk away, think about it, and come back later.

Having said that, I see no reason ammo will be getting cheaper anytime soon either.

Well, if the economy, thanks to the bail out of the chosen few, really does take a one way nose dive, the police will not get paid, becase of non-existent money. Therefore, we will hve to be the police:cool:

Between now and January, I suspect most price increases in 223 will be the result of concern over the election (supply & demand). But that's okay. I think it's time to buy your EBR. I don't buy much ammo at gunshows anymore except from GA Arms when they have a table. They often will have 41 mag ammo and I will buy a few 100 rounds from them.

Collector ammo is another matter. But you do have to know your pricing.
