Buying a gun out of state?

Gonna be in Arkansas for a few weeks (TDY) and as always will want to check out gun shops. My understanding is that a person can buy long guns other states but not handguns. As a Texas resident is there be anything special I have to do buy a long gun in Arkansas? I figure that if I come across a deal on a handgun I just can't resist I can have them ship it back to my usual FFL in TX. Can anyone help educate me?

I just bought a long gun out of state and the only additional thing they checked was whether or not the gun is legal in my home state. I asked about a handgun and you are right, no handgun purchases out of state. Sounds like you have everything right, and if not you can just ship the rifle back to your FFL too.

You know, I have purchased liquor out-of-state. And I bought a few vehicles at an auctuion out-of-state. Oh yeah, I almost bought some land out west. But, by golly, if I am travelling, God forbids that I buy a pistol. (Well, the government gods that is.)

What part of "National" in the NICS am I misunderstanding? Or do I only travel in order to commit crime?

I never got why the rifle and handgun purchases are treated differently by the laws.

If you want to hear really crazy, in Ohio, you cannot even purchase a rifle if you are from out of state and NOT a resident of one of its bordering states.

Really silly stuff about when, where and how we can purchase things we have a right to own.....now that SCOTUS agrees that we have 2A rights for real, MAYBE this silly purchase rules will go away....(ok, I'm dreaming hard on this one)

Why can't you "purchase" a handgun while you're out of state and just have it shipped from the dealer to your FFL? There has to be a way. I have purchased handguns from Bud's Gun Shop in KY (I live in MN) and they ship to my FFL so why couldn't it be done in person? My bet is that it can, you just can't pick it up in another state.

You can. But I guess the question really is, Why can't I just purchase a handgun out of state?

Here are two scenarioes:

Scenario One: I am in my home state. I decide that I really ought to have a .357 Magnum perhaps a Smith and Wesson, but I entertain the thought of a Taurus. (I definitely want stainless though.) I go to my LGS, fondle and decide to buy. I ink the 4473, they call, I buy and walk. Next day I go shoot, I like, I shoot, and I like. Then I proceed to buy thirteen holsters over the next three years to find the "right" one.

Scenario Two: I am not in my home state. I decide that I really ought to have a .357 Magnum perhaps a Smith and Wesson, but I entertain the thought of a Taurus. (I definitely want stainless though.) I go to Gander Mountain, fondle and decide to buy. I ink the 4473, they call, BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN, NATIONAL MEANS LOCAL, and the NCIS can't approve me because I must be up to no good because I am out of state. I mean what happens out of state, stays in out of state.

Give me a (procreating) break.

(3) for any person, other than a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to transport into or receive in the State where he resides (or if the person is a corporation or other business entity, the State where it maintains a place of business) any firearm purchased or otherwise obtained by such person outside that State, except that this paragraph (A) shall not preclude any person who lawfully acquires a firearm by bequest or intestate succession in a State other than his State of residence from transporting the firearm into or receiving it in that State, if it is lawful for such person to purchase or possess such firearm in that State, (B) shall not apply to the transportation or receipt of a firearm obtained in conformity with subsection (b)(3) of this section, and (C) shall not apply to the transportation of any firearm acquired in any State prior to the effective date of this chapter;

I don't see where the law differentiates between handguns and long guns. Myabe I'm reading it wrong or have missed something.

A person may only acquire a firearm within the person’s own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee's premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes.

It was the insanity of the politicians who created the GCA of 1968.

If you're within reasonable distance, try to get up to Ozark Guns in Searcy Arkansas. It's a nice shop, good stock, and if you come across as "properly qualified" you might get to see the back room. AKA, the drool room.
