Buying a Sig P6

As the title suggests, in a few weeks, I should be purchasing a Sig P6 police trade-in from AIM or some such. If anyone owns/has owned one of these guns, feel free to tell me why you like/dislike the gun. I have small hands, so I think this would be a good gun for me. I do have a specific question, though. Can those particular guns safely handle +P ammo?

Almost forgot. This will be my very first handgun.
 
It will make a fine entry into the handgun world. They are accurate, comfortable and low recoil. +P ammo is fine for carry, but a constant diet of hot stuff isn't cheap, practical, or necessary.

I picked one up in person from AIM and got great service! Enjoy.
 
The gun has an alloy frame so I wouldn't fire much +p in the gun. Mine is great though. Fun range gun, accurate, and so far I haven't had any problems like jams/ftf/fte. All I have shot through it is Fiocchi and a little bit of reloaded ammo, so its not really high quality ammo, just plinking ammo.

I purchased from Dan's Ammo in Pennsylvania. What I got was excellent. Check the roll pins through the slide holding the breechblock in. Odds are you'll see they are silver from being pushed in and out on one end. If so, those were arsenal reconditioned and have new springs already possibly.

When you get your Sig, it will probably need a good detail strip and cleanup. Sigs like to run a bit wet so don't worry about over-oiling. Take off the grips and clean any fuzz under there out and some oil on all moving parts.

The sights do not have white dots or outlines so a Wite-Out pen fixed that right up.

For $259, you can't go wrong.

Though the gun is alloy framed, +P ammo is OK, but for just practice and target use, don't bother to waste the money on them. For selfdefense ammo, the Gold Dot 124-gr +P is pretty good, but some people have had issues with hollowpoints not feeding...I have not had that problem on mine.

This is a great deal on great pistols, and when it's gone, it's gone, and you won't find this nice of a gun this cheap again.
 
I would say that the biggest negative for this gun is that they can be ammo sensitive and may not like your favorite hollowpoints.

Well if that doesn't say it all, I can only tell you they are about the best deals going right now PERIOD. I couldn't beleive it when I saw how nice of condition a SIG my brother brought back from his F.F.L. for well under 3 bills O.T.D. (along with holster, box, etc), you can't beat it HANDS DOWN. Also, NUFF SAID. :mad:
 
I would scrounge as many factory mags now as you can.

There aren't many around.

The trigger is heavy, but it can be remedied with a spring change.

There are tons of threads on the p6 and lots of reading material out there.

Search is your friend.
 
I got mine from Dan's Ammo (Grade I, 1980 manufacture, looks like new). I changed the plastic grips to wood and I love it. For the price it's almost unbeatable.
 
Okay, I've done some reading around on other threads, and I've so far read that you're better off getting a P6 with a serial number starting with "K" or higher in the alphabet as far as feeding hollowpoints...is there anything to that? And would these guns be alright for CCW? I've heard some saying they're too big/heavy.
 
I have my eye open for a P6 also and when my CWP comes in i will look around a few gun shows to fine one with serial k or higher... Price seems to keep going down on them also?
 
P6's are a pretty good deal. They are accurate, and even if you get an older one, you can have the ramp fixed to take hollow points with no problem. If you get a good belt and holster, there is no problem carrying one at all. Hard to beat them for the price.

I got mine on a Monday, and traded it off on Saturday without ever firing it. Brought it home, cleaned it up, and installed a 225 mainspring, to lighten the trigger pull, and loaded up some snap caps. I have pretty large hands, and before long, I noticed that the mag lip was right in the middle of my little finger, and it was not comfortable. By then I had also pinched my trigger finger, between the end of the trigger, and the trigger guard, several times.
I just decided the P6 was not for me, but that doesn't mean it won't be great for you.
 
You might want to consider dan's ammo, like everyone said, he has some nice guns at fair prices. I have bought several guns and a lot of ammo from him. He is a good guy to deal with, buy some ammo with it and he may cut you a deal.

On the contrary, I have not seen a P6 from a private seller for less than $300, while the distributors are still charging $269.ish...

Once AIM and others have exhausted the supply, expect prices to go right up to the mid $300 dollar range.
 
I'll probably go to AIM to buy it in person to avoid shipping/transfer fees and such and the option of picking out a gun and handling it before I plunk down my money.

I don't see the P6s listed at Dan's Ammo web site at the moment in any case.
 
you asked for opinions... many people hate the (really) heavy double action trigger. I haven't replaced mine, but I may.
 
+1 on Dan at dansammo.com. The one I got from him was extremely nice...a far cry from ANYTHING I have seen in gunshops. Nice leather holster and mag pouches. Appeared to be freshly cleaned and lubed with a medium oil, so I checked and and took it to the range. It ate a box of ammo with zero problems. I couldn't find extra factory mags online, so I bought 2 of the bad bad Promags just because I can't stand to have less than 4. They fed fine and even have a larger finger rest on the bottom.

Anyone, where's a good place to order wood grips?...and, is anyone aware of an online source that still has factory mags in stock?

I just checked Dan's site and he doesn't have them listed anymore...now listing HK P9S for $649.00 in addition to Walther P1s still. You might want to call...he may still have a few.
 
B.T.W. that was to the tune of G.N.R.'s Sweet Child O'Mine J.I.C. anyone thought I was crazy L.O.L. ("where do we go..." etc)!
 
Pro Mag now makes magazines for the P6. I haven't used one so I don't know if they're any good. J&G has them.
 
I got mine form Dan's ammo. When it arrived it looked brand new. Shoots very well and is light and easy to carry. In my opinion, it is the best bang for the 9mm buck at this time.
