Buying Bulk(sabots,bullets)??

I have heard that buying in bulk can save you lots of money. I looked at Cabelas Masters Catlog and there is a huge saving. But should I find the load that works then buy? And what dia. can I shoot with a .50? .451,.452 what is the difference? Havest sabots the best buy?? If you can help let me know. Thanks george

You are right, buying in bulk can & will save you money in the long run but you really need to find a load that your rifle likes first but here is some things that I've learned.

The XTP bullets that many companies tout with their package of sabots are the same ones in the reloading department by Hornady, in your case a .452 in either the 240gr. 250gr. or 300gr. XTPs they come in boxes of 100, & the Sabots crom Cabelas "packaged in just 50?" by Harvester seem Ok for the job.

I don't shoot Saboted Bullets like these so I'm only going by what my friend has & uses for his Traditions Yukon.

Indeed it can. I buy the sabots in bulk and buy the Hornady XTP bullets by the 100s. I don't like the .451-.452 XTP bullets and use the .430 bullets instead. I've killed a couple dozen deer and about 100 hogs with the .430, 240 grain XTP bullet. Most were bang flops.

when i first started shooting my .50cal i used sabots alot. but it was very quickly that i learned that this was not the way to go. I then purchased some of the hornady cast bullets in .50. So on was my quest to find a bullet hopefully one i can cast myself. Then i stumbled on the lee precision R.E.A.L bullet. I then purchased the mold and started casting my own bullets. Amazingly these bullets perform very very good and have very good accuracy. As for shooting with sabots i was shooting a lot. I shot .452 as i was already casting .452 bullets so it was easy for me to get the sabots and use my own bullets. I also tried to use other makes of bullets. I found powerbelt bullets the best. Great on accuracy and overall performance. However the price seemed just to high for what i wanted to pay. So today i only use the R.E.A.L bullets. i have been very happy using them so far.

Individual sabots are made to fit a specific caliber of bullet to a specific bore size and are sold in bulk.

They're usually made to fit either .429/.430 bullets (.44 magnum),
or .45 bullets (.451 -.452). Then you can try out bullets of different weight, profile and composition with them. But there's usually an amount of trial and error required to match the performance of the factory sabot/bullet combinations.
Some sabots are made to fit tighter than others, and they can even have a different number of petals. Read about the different diameters and types on the MMP site listed below.

If you look at MMP's closely, there's even a sabot that allows the use of a .457 - .458 bullet, and another that loads a .399 - .40 bullet.

True good thing i already knew this. i bought both sabots in .44 and .45 as i had a bunch of .44s to use. Then i had hundreds of .45s. I have shot all kinds of bullets. I think the best were wad cutters in 45. 300 grain. worst were actually round nose. But that was two part. one i did not have a good bullet stater with the right tip. So it always changed the shape of the tip. I imagine this happened all the way down the barrel too.
