Ok so was carrying and decided to quick stop at Wal-Mart. I found an outfit I thought was good for the price it was. (a nice dress for $5. Jon likes it now that I've worn it it to church so it was worth it.)

The problem was when I went to try it on. I didn't know where to put my gun. I couldn't put it on the floor someone might have seen it. I don't carry a purse so I couldn't put it there. There was no bench in the one I was in so I couldn't set it there.

Should I have left it in the car? Should I have brought a bag in to put it in? What would you have done? Do you take it in if you know you are going to try on clothes? What should I do next time?

Thanks

Maybe take two items of the same thing in different sizes (the excuse for taking two) and use one as a cover as you place the gun on the floor. Be sure to pick a spot on the floor that is impossible to reach from under the dinky doors they have in fitting rooms.

I carry IWB, and simply remove the holstered gun at the same time as my jeans. I then fold the gun into my jeans so it's out of sight when I set the jeans on the floor next to my shoes. Of course, if you do that you can't walk out of your dressing room to get another size, but that's about the only real drawback.

I do what Pax does. I may also carry a bag if I know I'm going shopping; either a Camelbak or a Wilderness Safepacker depending on where I am.

Always go shopping with a friend if possible. (Tactically a good idea!) Have trusted, pro-gun, accurate-shootin', situationally-aware friend hold gun while you try on clothes?

'Course I guess you need to find a way to transfer the firearm to your friend without being seen.... maybe a "purse-gun" for those shopping days?

I try to pocket carry if I am shopping for clothes. Since I usually wear pants :scrutiny: I just make sure that the gun (usually a Kel-tec P32) stays in MY pants pocket when I try on other stuff. I don't leave it there unattended.

Although I wear shoulder rigs whenever I can, they are a real pain when trying on clothes!

I do the pax leave-the-iwb-in-the-pants thing.

Hanging it on a hanger might be an option, too, as wingnutz says.

And I am sure no store minds you taking merchandise and a large bag into the dressing room.

Store guard: "Please come with me sir"
Skunky " What? Why?"
SG: "We need to check your bag"
Skunky "There's nothing in there but my gun."
SG: :what:

I mail order most of my clothes. I know what fits otherwise. Haven't been in a store dressing room in years.

Hanging a gun on a hook means through the trigger guard, and that's a BIIIIIG no-no. I suppose your holster might be hangable. That would be all right.

Of course, if your 1911 has a lanyard, you're all set. :)

I would STRONGLY advise against hanging a gun by a hook through the trigger guard. I have personally seen the results. I guy I knew did that when he went into the lavatory, excuse me...he used to do this. He was carrying a Glock and when he went to remove it from the hook......BOOM.

Good thing he had already taken care of buisness or else he probably would have filled his pants.:what:

If that is your only option I think that I would unload first.

Take your belt off with the holster, and hang that from the hook.

Chances are pretty good you're going to want to try your clothes with your gun on anyway, to check concealment, so you'll have to unwind the holster anyway.

Just put it on the floor. But you need to be safe and you don't want a child picking it up and shooting it so fire off all the rounds first until it's completely empty. I like to find a nice recliner or bean bag chair to empty it into.

So why would you need to put it somewhere?

The dress doesn't fit if you can't carry comfortably... :neener:

I rarely buy dresses. Pax seems to make sense. Aren't you in the room with the pistol??? Are do you run out to show Jon? (Jon, word of advice from experience, just smile and nod, smile and nod--"that's very nice").

However, when going to the tailor for a new suit, I give the guns to the tailor. "Eye haf seeeen man-nee of thozzz in old country, but on-lee men in unaform." Rest of my clothes come from a catalogue. ;)

Thanks for the imput. I don't usually take Jon with me. I like to surprise him. Besides he hates shopping and so do I. So why make him? I don't usually shop with people who are ....into guns. So I can't pass them off or anything like that. I think from now on I'll try and wrap them in my clothes I was wearing.

Thanks

Suggested you read Paxton Quigley's book on Women & guns. I think she discusses clothing. Women want to be fashionable, but when packing, compromises need to be made.
