Buying guns in Tennessee?

Hello.

I will be looking for a Taurus 85 in the very near future. I prefer to buy used, or at least through a private sale, since I save on tax, hassle, and private collectors are generally cheaper becuase they arent usually looking for a profit.

I never bought a gun through a private sale in Tennessee though. Could someone please explain the process of the sale of handguns in the state of Tennessee?

Not much to explain. No permits or "safety inspections" necessary. If you are a TN resident and are legally allowed to buy a gun, then a private party resident of TN can sell it to you. You give them the cash, and they give you the gun. If you go through a dealer, you get a background check in the process and pay sales taxes.

When I used to live there (he says with far off look in his eyes) you just handed the seller the $$ and he handed you the gun.

When I bought new, I had to have the sheriff approve the sale.

However, your statement that "private collectors are generally cheaper becuase they arent usually looking for a profit" is not always accurate. Many people feel they should get what they paid, or close to it. They often have little understanding of the used gun market.

You had to have a sheriff approve the sale? Where and when? This must have been a LONG time ago -- before NICS. The only time I need law enforcement approval these days is for Class 3 transfers.

I lived in Fentress County from 1992 through 1998. There were precious few dealers (only one, I think) so my handgun purchases came via GunList magazine.

Anyway, I remember having to hand carry a form to the sheriff who signed it. Then I carried it back to the dealer who had taken receipt of the handgun.
