Buying guns while living out of home state

I have a chance to take a long-term job out of state. While there can I buy a gun and then legally take it home at the end of the job? Or do I have to send it to a home state FFL to be legal?
I live in the fascist state of ILL, and the job would be in a free state, Kentucky.
 
I would check with Ky first and see what you need to do to achieve resident status.
Just guessing, it would include a mailing address and maintaining a residence for at least 6 months.
If you don't meet the resident requirements, your looking at having to send the firearms to a FFL in your home state.

Maybe some of the other members can give you more info.
 
Why not make the move permanent? Get a drivers license and register to vote and don't sweat the BS in ILL. This from a guy who had to move to CA for contract work. I will be moving back.
 
PoiDog: If its longer than a few weeks, swap your residency to Ky (but keep your FOID if you can), buy all the cool stuff and then move back. A better option would be to not move back to Ill, though. :D

Kharn, believe me, the thought of moving to Kentucky has occurred to me. :p
As it is I'm looking into moving to Indiana, which as El Tejon can tell you has WAY better laws than the PRI.
Anyway, it looks like the job will be for about 10 months which is probably enough to establish residency.
I just asked the question since I'd be there quite a while, and if a rifle or handgun cries out "Buy Me" I wanted to do it the right way.

On a lighter note, if it goes through I'll only be a couple of hours away from Knob Creek next month. :D

Most states require you to get drivers license and plates within 30 days of being employed in state.

Once you have drivers license, you are a resident for most purposes. Here in MT, if you have a MT dirvers license you can buy handgun or whatever, subject only to NICS.

Except that most states require 6 months or more to buy resident fishing or hunting license - double standard.

You need to check Kentucky laws
 
If you're going to be here for 10 months then you can get your CCDW (what we call a CCW around here) after 6. If you keep your IL id then you can get long arms but handguns would have to be transfered back to IL.

Back in '78/'79 I was detailed to Georgia for nine months. While there I saw a handgun I wanted to buy. The dealer knew my situation. I showed him my rent receipt and he sold me the gun. When my detail was up I just took it back home to California with me. Didn't tell the state, though. I think that's a crime now. Don't know if it was then.

WOW, PoliDog, you'll be in KY in time for BOTH of the Knob Creek shoots. Get to at least one of them. You'll never go back to IL.
 
0007, I was at Knob Creek in 2000 for the spring show. What a great time! I've never seen so much ammo move so quickly. Case after case going out on 2 wheeled dollies, those gators taking loads of stuff out. It was excellent. Best military gun show I've ever seen. Of course the shows in Illinois aren't too good as you might expect.

I WILL be going to at least one of them, I won't be far away, maybe a couple of hours.

I'll check into the laws real soon and see what has to be done. It's a temporary job, I'll have to see if that changes anything. Thanks for the input everyone.
