Buying pulled bullets?

This is what I got from the seller of a batch of .30 carbine bullets that I bought;

"Demilitarization is the process in which ammunition is disassembled due to terms of military contracts. For example if a term of the military contract between Federal or Lake City is broken they are prohibited from selling the "live ammo" to the public. instead the ammunition has to be disassembled. These are Demilitarized pulled bullets, new but once loaded then pulled apart. These have very minimal pull marks and are ready to load. No sizing is needed."

Just like ReloaderFred said

I've also bought Federal HST "pulled" bullets in both 9mm and 45 Auto, and have had no problems with them.

What powder recipe are you using for your HST pulled bullets in 9mm? Also, Have you reloaded hi-shok and hydra-shok before? If so, could you supply the recipe for powder/primer combo you used?

5.5gr of BE-86 gets me around 1,100fps. I use CCI 500 spp. I haven't loaded any hi-shoks

I beleive Zero does.
Does anyone besides Hornady make the "encapsulated" bullets with the copper disc on the bottom?

These are both Hornady.

vaalpens, looks like you did well for $30 shipped.

I have done my first exploratory loads with the 155/165/180 pulled bullets I received from American reloading, and so far no issues yet. I have not seen any exceptional accuracy yet, so I will probably try out some more load options before deciding on my bulk plinking loads.

Following are the chrono data and best groupings so far. The chrono data is incomplete since I was shooting late afternoon and had some issues for a few rounds without noticing it.

I did some additional load workups for the pulled bullets. The bullets I received had around 60 165gr bullets, so I decided to only do one powder, and do it from my minimum load up to the max. The load range was from 5.7gr to 7.5gr using BE-86.

The results are as expected where my 5.8gr load was the best again, and then a second accurate load was seen towards the higher charges. I decided to stop my testing at 7.3gr since recoil was heavy, cases were ejected a long way, and the grouping started opening up again. There was no need to test any further since I won't be loading these bullets at 7.4gr and 7.5gr in any case.

Following are the test results:

My previous load workup with the 155gr pulled bullets did not give me the accuracy I expected, so I decided to try CFE Pistol. With CFE Pistol the SD/ES numbers are not always that good, but it improves at higher pressures. This is one of the reasons I prefer a shorter COL. Following are the results:

CFE Pistol is performs better with more pressure, and the above results probably proves that. I will probably increase the load a bit with CFE Pistol just to see if the accuracy drops off or improves.

Just a quick recap regarding the pulled bullets:
  • These bullets performs very well for the price point
  • I did find some different profiled 180gr bullets, so you need to be prepared to sort the bullets and not just weigh them.
  • A loading process where you handle the bullets as much as possible is in my mind better since the feel of the bullet can sometimes help differentiating between different profiles
  • I did find a few bullets that had a difficulty fitting inside the mouth of the case, probably due to how they were pulled. Placing bullets by hand helped identifying these.
  • The few that was a tight fit in the case mouth, were loaded, but I think having a Lee FCD helps with bullets that could be misformed a bit.
  • I have not culled any bullet yet, but I had to take some care when loading these bullets.

I have purchased several thousand of these pulled bullets from American reloading and like you have cleaned them and hand sorted them by weight. I have not sorted them by type yet, which I will do. I have been working up some loads, but have not yet found any as accurate as yours. I will try some of your recipes.

For me the $29.99 price per 500 is definitely worth it, even with the extra effort in sorting the bullets.

Yesterday, I received a package of 500 (ended up being 528) 224 soft point bullets from American Reloading. I ordered it during one of their 25% off sales, so the 500 bullets were $29.99 including shipping (or 6 cents per round). It was a batch of various weights.

For those who have never bought mixed lots of salvaged bullets, here's what I received (each lot will be different, but a distribution like this is not unusual):
249 - 62 grain Boat Tail Soft Point (BTSP)
107 - 62 grain Flat Base Soft Point (FBSP) the bottom of the bullet was stamped with the letter "T"
25 - 62 grain FBSP
56 - 55 grain FBSP with a "T" stamped on the bottom
67 - 55 grain FBSP
21 - 55 grain FBSP with the base of the bullet having a slight concave
1 - 55 grain Boat Tail FMJ
1 - 55 grain Flat Base Hollow Point
1 - 55 grain (more or less) thing that I think at one time may have been a bullet.

In my case, the one FMJ will join some others that look like they came from the same manufacturer and the other two oddball bullets will be recycled. The 55 grain ones will be used interchangeably on "well below maximum" plinking loads and the 62 grain flat base bullets will join some others that also appear to come from the same manufacturer and for the 62 grain BTHP, I will develop a load for it for use in hunting.

I wasn't planning to do more load development with the 155gr bullet, but I could not decide between CFE Pistol and Power Pistol, so I decided to try something else and capture some more data points.

I decided to also try HP-38, and used the Hodgdon 155gr XTP load data as a guide. Following are the results:

This now concludes all my 40s&w pulled bullet load workup. This has been a great experience for me and I have collected a lot of data from these bullets, even through they were pulled. My feeling is that the accuracy was very good with these bullets, but the chrono ES/SD numbers maybe suffered a bit since these bullets were pulled. Overall I have a learned a lot with not much of a capital outlay.

Superb, that gives me a great idea where to start with BE-86 and 180s for my son's .40. See how it stacks up against Blue Dot and Longshot.

Glad to see that at least somebody is reading my posts. Hopefully you will be able to gain some information from the above test. The length of these 180gr bullets were between .597" and .600". It seems that BE-86 performs good with 165gr and 180gr bullets in 40s&w.

We are using the X-Treme 180 Gr "HP" which is .605 long loaded to 1.130 to 1.135 OAL.

We tried the ACME coated 180 Gr, but the ogive was partly in the case at max .40 OAL. Loaded longer can cause issues with the plunk test, not fit some mags, and in general cause issues. It did shoot pretty well, but I picked up 1K of the X-Treme "blems" ($81) for the kids. We like to run them at 950ish FPS. I'll likely start at 6.0 Grs BE-86 based on Alliant's data and your tests.

The only plated 40s&w bullets I have experience with are the 165gr Xtreme RNFPHPCB bullets. They seem to show similar accuracy as the FMJ bullets at the same load of 5.8gr. With the 180gr plated bullets I don't have much experience, so hopefully 6gr will be a good starting point for those HP's.

On the lower end for the 180gr FMJ's I like the 4.4gr to 4.6gr range using HP38. With the pulled bullets I had 45 180gr bulets with a different FP profile, not RN or RS. The seemed to have more pull/crimp marks but gave a tighter fit in the case. I loaded them with 4.6gr HP38 and tested 5 of them while I had the chrono out. They gave a surprisingly good grouping of .69" at at 15yards:

I read your posts too Vaal
It was just a "tongue in cheek" comment. I know the members read my posts since I get plenty push-back. I was actually surprised that nobody backed up or questioned the testing results I got with your 124gr FMJ FP bullets in 357sig.

The load is still my #1 in accuracy at both 15yards and 25yards. This is definitely my go-to bullet in 357sig, but I am still trying to find that accuracy sweet spot in 9mm.

Walkalong's Little Lasers are a good starting spot for your search, IMO. :D

Thanks for the suggestion, but I would probably stay away from the 9mm 1450fps loads. I will probably just get my speed fix from my 357sig loads, but even limit those to keep the wear to a minimum on my pistol.

One of these days I will do a full load workup in 9mm with the 124fr FMJ FP to try and find a sweet spot. I just need to decide on the powder I want to use to put the extra effort in.

A few weeks ago I bought some more 40s&w FMJ FP bullets from American Reloading. This thread is getting old, but I decided to share my last test data since I have posted a few 40s&w test results with pulled bullets already on this thread.

The last bullets I bough contained about 70 165gr bullets and the rest 155gr bullets. The loads I tested were some Sports Pistol with the 165gr bullet, and some CFE Pistol again with the 155gr bullet. One thing I found is that the chrono data (ES/SD) is not always that good, but at least I see some decent accuracy. Following are the results from my latest testing at 15yards using a rest:

First the SportPistol loads with a 165gr bullet.
