Cabela’s Primer Pricing Just Went Berserk

an extremely overpriced J Dewey cleaning rod

They ain't cheap but they're very good. I once read that Rabbi Mermelstein only uses Dewey cleaning rods. Anyway, I just bought some large rifle primers in Bass Pro Shops and they were $3.99 for the small sleeve. But I think they'll go up because re-loading is on the rise and the demand is increasing for components everywhere.

Mark my solution is turning to this since the buy out. The closest shop to me hat handles any volume and selection of primers and powders is about 2.25hrs away. So a round trip with shopping time is going to be about 5 hours. I now have a pretty good idea as to what my yearly usage is for primers so my plan is to plan a once a year road trip and buy enough primers and powders to last that year. It may not be as convenient as it was just running to Cabela's when I need something but I do believe this will save me some time and money. I have even compared this to ordering online and it still works out a bit cheaper, unless I can wait of course for a FREE offer for shipping or Hazmat.

Now in honesty I have to say that my years worth purchase would only last a few of these people here a couple months. Even with that it would be worth it then to make the trip quarterly. Besides I like road trips, it gets me out of the house. Plus there is a fancy new range up that way with timed electronic targets.

Almost no primers at Utah Cabelas yesterday. Winchester SPP for $35/1K and CCI SPP for $4/100.
I'm not paying that, sorry. Guess I'll start buying online when I find a sale.
Try the Scheel's if it's not too long of a drive for you. CCI 500's are usually $29.99. The price seems to go up and down between that and $32.99 and they seem to always be in stock.

Thanks. I check Scheels also but I like to buy from Cabelas because I get bonus points on my Cabelas MC, and can pay for primers with points. Though since the change to capital one I'm finding it a huge PITA and I might just give up altogether. Capital one is terrible.

You make a good case, Kevin. I’m looking everywhere, trying to find a shop that carries loading components. It’s quite the challenge. I’ve found lots of places that carry ammo and firearms...but no luck, yet, on reloading. If I follow your lead that would take me into Indiana or Kentucky. I’m willing to bet there’re great deals to be had..but I sure don’t want to make the trip without assurances. I’m thinking the search engines are blocking keywords...so I keep coming up empty. Unlike you I have no idea what my annual need is....since I’m barely one year into this obsession.

If I'm just needing 1 lb to test I either buy it from a local pawn shop (in an adjacent town) where his prices are inline where they should be. The one in my town makes Cabella's look like a HF discount store, I buy nothing from him. Or I catch a gun show near buy and get it there.

Between the higher prices and switch to MC through Capital One following the holidays we are done. I get better perks using my Harley Davidson card. Need to buy something to use the Cabela's bucks but I am pretty sure my wife and I are done with them.

Mark shoot me a PM with your general location and I'll see what I can find for you. Even id you can get an internet order down to one or two shipments per year it will save time and money.

I've based my needs by the number of primers I've used over the past couple years as that is the hardest item to replace for me. At current usage rates 3k small pistol and 2k large pistol primers will last me about 1 year. Powders I'm not as worried about as that I can find at a number of places. One shop only stocks CCI primers and I have a pistol that absolutely refuses to shoot them.

It isn't like primers go bad in a short period of time; buy the 5000 sleeve; you can always sell any leftover to another reloader; open sleeves of primers are not the same as open bottles of powder.

I'm glad I live near a sportsman's warehouse. Prices there seem resonable.
I just went to Sportsman's Warehouse this afternoon. I picked up a 4lber of Herco for $70! ($69.97). I love Herco in 9mm and 357 Mag. and 12 gauge. I think it was on sale because Alliant is coming out with a "New and Improved" Herco.
All Reloder rifle powders were $29.99, 1 lb bottles of all Alliant pistol powders were $23.99. These prices are $10 per lb less than Cabelas.

I just got an email from PrecisionReloading.com advertising Herco, Red Dot, and Unique on clearance for $129.99 per 8lb jug. Are you kidding me?

Midsouth Shooters Supply (www.midsouthshooterssupply.com) has specials that drop the hazmat fee. It might be spend $125 or more or buy 5#'s of Shooters World powder and the fee is waived. Powder Valley (www.powdervalleyinc.com) also has some great prices and their hazmat fee is reasonable if your looking for certain types of powders or components. For once fired brass, www.oncefiredbrass.com has some good offers.

Happy reloading
