Call or Email Bush about the AW ban

I faxed the White House. I also sent faxes to my two Senators and my Represntative.

Dear President Bush,

I am writing this letter to urge you to OPPOSE any new legislation that may reach your desk regarding the so called “Assault Weapons†ban.
I am sorely disappointed to hear your comments stating that you support such utter nonsense.

I’m sure you know that this ban has been a farce from the start. It banned semi auto rifles that looked “evil†because they have a bayonet lug and pistol grip on them. These are not assault weapons. They are not machine guns. I like to call them Homeland Defense rifles. It is a farce that criminals use these types of rifles in crimes. A criminal who intends to rob the corner store sure doesn’t carry in a semi auto rifle that is difficult to conceal. They use small handguns which are not normally acquired through legal channels. Banning weapons because of how they look is just plain ridiculous feel good garbage.

More ridiculous is the ban on magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. I find it odd that somehow the police can use a 15 round magazine in a pistol to defend their lives yet as an ordinary Joe I am limited in my defense by 10 rounds. Is a policeman’s life more important than mine?

Mr. President, I am your base voter. I was disappointed that you teamed up with Kennedy to spend my money on education. I’m disappointed that you want to spend more of my money on pills for seniors. I am disappointed that you have not forged ahead on the issue of letting me control my retirement and reforming social security to that end. But even though I have those disappointments, those stances by you have only cost me money. Sir, your support of and your signature on this ridiculous weapons ban will cost me freedom I love. And that Mr. President, will cost you my vote.

I will not vote for any politician who supports gun control. In 1994 over 60 representatives lost their jobs over this issue and this vote. I have always voted Republican since my first vote for Ronald Regan in 1984. We have fought tooth and nail as gun owners to get Republicans to the position they are in. We keep losing our gun rights and for no good reason that I can see. Republicans who have paid good lip service to gun owners over the years now control the House, the Senate and the Presidency. There is no excuse for any bill banning any firearms or magazines for those arms to be passed into law. Let the Clinton ban quietly expire.

The question that I need you to reply to me with is simple.

Are you with us, or against us?

Sincerely,

I hope it helps, but I doubt it. Bush has consistently said he doesn't have any problems with the ban on so-called assault weapons. This is yet another case in which the Republicans know that they don't have to listen to anything gun owners say because the Democrats are even worse than they are. There'll be lots of blustering and threats of voting against anyone who favors the ban, but when it comes down to it, I predict few gun owners will follow through. If all gun owners voted for presidential candidates who believed in the Constitution, we'd be on our third Libertarian president by now, instead of preparing for 2004 by hoping that maybe Bush won't stab us in the back too much this time.

So David, you don't bother to write I guess.

Just like my letter said. I'm a Republican, always have been, but this is it for me. I will most certainly follow through. No excuses, they have the power in all branches. No it's time to put up or shut up. No more lip service to gun owners. The best thing.....all they have to do is do nothing and I'll be happy.

There's a lot more folks that need letters/fax's than just the President.

The ideal situation is that it never reaches his desk..

He's said he'd sign it, but I've yet to hear him actually pushing for it.

I don't think it'll matter for us NY'ers w/ our own State version of the ban, but it'd be nice to see most of the country regain lost freedoms.

I did something else...

I took my first step of protest when someone from the RNC fund-raising office called to ask me to renew my national membership. I politely declined and told him why. He suggested that I call the RNC directly and register my opinion but still tried to talk me into giving. I did not. But I will be following this discussion up with phone calls, letters and emails.

The bill must originate in the House.

Last week, Tom DeLay said "NO WAY" any renewal of that bill would ever see the light of day in the house.

I believe him.

Bush took the politically expedient route of saying, initially, that he favored the bill as written, then later stating that he would sign a renewal of the bill.

You can say what you want about Bush, but one thing you can not say is that he is in any way slow or dim. The man takes his fathers sneakiness and elevates it to a form of art.

The first statement supporting the bill as written was harmless because if you read the bill it says that at the conclusion of the bills life a study would be done and if the bill could be proved to have reduced crime then the congress may wish to renew the bill.

The second position by the Bush administration, was in my opinion, bait for the Democrats. Bush knows what a volitile issue gun rights are. Now a bunch of nanny Democrats are running around trying to gain support for this dead horse. The more they whine about banning guns, right down to the elections next a year from this fall, the more distraction that will provide to anything of substance the dimocrats may come up with. Bush also knows that this is a devisive issue with many Democrats. Several of them realize that there is enough passion around the issue to cost them an election here and there. So, by encouraging this debate, Bush encourages the further public splitting of the democratic party.

Politics is an ugly thing that usually makes me sick to observe. But, when played well, it is sometimes entertaining.

I have an original thought for you.

I personally think Clinton cut a deal with his chinese friends wherein he would snag a hidden commission on the sale of every NORINCO AK sold. When he started making noises about banning Assault Rifles you may remember that the sale of these rifles went through the roof. I still have mine! I remember insane prices being paid for the AK's back in 93 and leading into 94 when the AWB was passed.

Next year, we will get back hi caps and the prices of pre ban guns will fall through the floor:D

Not to worry, I sent faxes the same day with similar letters to both my Senators in DC and at thier local offices and to my Rep. in DC and his local office. And I will continue to fax them with increasing frequency as Sept '04 approaches or when news warrants it. I'm open to suggestions of who else needs a letter.

Mark, if you've ever been a donor or are otherwise known to the RNC, I'd suggest a letter will help. Otherwise probably not.

Shaggy, you're right that I'll not be writing Bush again. I wrote him on this issue during the election campaign for 2002. He appears to be sayin now the same thing he was saying then.

But I am contacting my representatives on this one an urging them to vote no on the renewal.

Some folks here on THR and elsewhere have opined that Bush, by saying he will SIGN a renewal bill if it gets to his desk, is dodging the heat that the Democrats would bring on him if he declared opposition to the bill in principle, and that he doesn't really want a bill to make it that far. I hope that's correct. It's just that I'm not confident. I recall all to clearly that when President Bush 1.0 saw an opportunity to make political hay by stabbing the NRA in the back, he grabbed it. Maybe his son is a better person than that. I guess we'll see.

I wrote a letter to Bush, sent e-mails to my congresscritters. I already wrote them (about the AWB) a month or two ago, so I'll wait a bit before writing again.

I hope everyone out there does the same.

Just dropped a letter in snail mail to GW. Don't know that it will do any good but at least I can say I tried.

Does anyone know what happens to them upon arrival? Does some intern just read it and note the topic, for or against, and shred it or something else?

Really?

And when the liberals and Million Moms start whining and crying about "the children" and the next school shooting where a semi auto is used gets splattered all over the TV as proof that "assault weapons" must go- think Delay et al will stand up and counter their arguements with truth and reality? Or will they do what most do when confronted by hysterical whining- give in to shut them up.

The Democrats are liars and scam artists- the Republicans are too often gutless. Unless our side starts winning over public opinion, we may lose big.:uhoh:

Not to worry..........
Tom DeLay is from Houston and definitely is NOT gutless. If he says a bill is "dead on arrival", believe it. I've liked this guy from day one. This is where the battle will be won or lost, in the House. Not the WH or the Senate or anywhere else. Think positive......

I agree with this assesment. I got a letter from some organization back before the elections stressing the need to keep a republican house majority in order to make sure this ban did not get renwed. That letter was signed by Tom Delay.

OK- that's one.

You tell me where the Republicans have done more than hold the line or lose ground (OK, maybe an occaisional win), where liberals inch ever forward on every one of the rotten items on their agenda.
