campfires and guns

gspn, how do you like that BioLife CampStove? Seems like a nifty idea.

I like it. I wouldn't take it on every hike...but it does what it advertises. My iPhone is my primary camera when hiking/camping/fishing so it's nice to have an easy way to recharge it at the end of the day.

If I was in a hurry I'd use another stove...but most of the time I'm by myself and at the end of the day i'm in no particular hurry so the BioLite works fine.

Going camping without a gun is how 73% of B horror movies start out. While I enjoy watching them, I'm not about to be the subject of another one, if I can help it.

I nearly ALWAYS am armed when I'm outside the house. Why would I treat camping any different?

The nights are beginning to cool off a little and while I had planned on going camping on the TN river, the family schedule prevented that from happening.

So tonight I simply went out back and had a fire in the chiminia. Even though I was in my own backyard I felt the urge to bring a sidearm. Not out of any need...but simply because it "feels" right to have a gun with a campfire.

Am I alone here?

Personally I don't carry in my backyard but at the ranch I do just for an occasional rattlesnake, feral hog, a passing coyote etc.

It's still a couple of months away for cooler weather here to enjoy "campfires" in my backyard.

My back yard is visited by coyotes quite frequently. I am armed while around the camp fire out back, mowing the lawn, checking the propane....
I walked out Saturday evening to get a tool from my Jeep, and while out there checked on a potential spot to snipe the groundhog that's been ravaging our garden. As I surveyed the spot, I turned my head to see said groundhog standing at the edge of the garden ... staring back at me ... undoubtedly laughing because I'd walked out there unarmed at dinner time.

Guess I'll get him next weekend.

I basically live in the woods, I don't even go outside without my pistol. About a week ago I went outside at night and there were a couple bears just hanging out about 20 yards away in the bushes, scared em off with the AK.

its always been natural to be at camp with a gun. in fact, it became a regular deal. when i was younger, we would go hunting for about 3 weeks at a time, and the area we were in (even if the Game and Inland fisheries denies it) had cougars transplanted to help take care of some game over population (i'll see if i can get the pictures from our game cameras) and you would hear them at night which made us all hold on to those guns alittle tighter. its actually became such a big part of a having a fire, that when me and my wife were engaged, i was at a cook out at her parents that turned into all of us sitting around a fire after dark, and i felt the explicit need to have my 30-30 on me and so got it out of the truck and went back to sitting around the fire. when asked why i had it, my best spur of the moment reply was, "well, i saw a coon earlier and if he comes back im gonna get it." they were alittle unsettled at first, but needless to say, they now know that around a fire, i will have my rifle.

I always have something on me when out by a fire, even a fire in the yard.

No fire in the picture, this was the next morning. Good grizzly country.
