Norwich Man Shot by College Roommate in New Hampshire
Shooter Then Kills Himself
By Izaskun E. Larrañeta

Jason Lillibridge, a Norwich (CT) resident, was shot and wounded by his Keene State College roommate this morning in Keene, N.H., police said.

Lillibridge, a junior at the college and a 2004 Norwich Free Academy graduate, received a single gunshot wound to his buttocks. He was in fair condition at Cheshire Medical Center before being transferred to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Officials at the hospital said they were not authorized to release information on his condition.

After shooting Lillibridge, 20-year-old Michael Dyke of Orford, N.H., then killed himself as police talked with him through his closed bedroom door, police said. Police said a third roommate was present.

Lillibridge called police at about 12:34 a.m. reporting that his roommate had just shot him. Lillibridge and Dyke, a sophomore, lived in an off-campus apartment house on Willow Street in a residential neighborhood about a quarter-mile from campus.

Police responded to the scene and found Dyke inside an upstairs apartment. As officers entered the room, Dyke, who was holding a rifle, shot himself with a single round, killing himself instantly, Lt. Jay Duguay said.

Police found Lillibridge nearby, on Willow Court.

“The investigation is continuing and preliminary reports indicate the shooting and suicide were spontaneous but it is not yet fully clear to what sparked the shooting,” Duguay said.

Duguay said police are still piecing together what may have led to the shooting.

"We still have several interviews to conduct," he said. "From what we know, it doesn't appear that there was ongoing feud. It appears to be a spontaneous situation."

The New Hampshire State Medical Examiners Office is conducting an autopsy.

County Attorney Peter Heed said alcohol may have contributed to the shooting so he authorized toxicology tests to be performed on Dyke as well.

Heed said a third roommate was a witness to the shooting. The roommate told authorities that Dyke was making “some indications to injure himself after the shooting, which he did.”

Heed said the roommate has been cooperative with authorities.

John Iovino, director of student affairs at NFA, said Lillibridge was a “great kid,” and an honors student who was involved in school activities. His sister is a 10th-grader at NFA and a brother graduated from NFA.

“I know the family well,” Iovino said. “Certainly, we’re saddened to learn he was a victim of this shooting. Our thoughts in the NFA community are with the family at this time.”

Lillibridge was a member of Project Outreach, NFA’s largest student community service club, and was on the boys' volleyball team. He also participated in intramural programs at the school. He is the son of Daniel and Susan Lillibridge. They could not be reached for comment.

The shooting occurred on the last day of finals and two days before graduation. Many students had left campus and others were unaware of the shooting this morning.

College President Helen Giles-Gee said there was no indication that Dyke had a history of mental illness or criminal record.

“It is important for you to know that from the onset the Keene Police Department has viewed the incident as an isolated event and that there has not been any threat of danger to our campus or community,” Giles-Gee said.

Finals and graduation would be held as scheduled, she said.

“As a campus, we mourn the death of Michael Dyke and hope for the rapid recovery of Jason Lillibridge.

Counseling is available to all students at the Counseling Center,” an earlier college statement said.

A student who lived downstairs and was friends with the three said Dyke was a management major who "always seemed like he was a happy kid."

The student, who declined to give his name, said he hadn't known Dyke had a gun.

He said he and others tried to visit Lillibridge at the hospital, but were not allowed.

Apparently, this happened in an off-campus apartment.
(Unfortunately, report made it sound like a dorm shooting 'til about 1/3 way into the article)

I wonder if Prozac or one of its cousins was involved - seems to be quite common in these situations.
