Can Anyone ID This Gun?

I have been wanting to get into shooting blackpowder guns for some time . Now seems to be a good time, for several reasons. The main one is that I am at a place in my life where I have the time and money. Mostly that I have the money.

I shot a BP handgun, several years ago, that a friend owned. Have been looking for one like it for a while now. Saw this picture and it looks like the same one. The closest I been able to find. While looking at various guns, the 1858 new Army is the one that looks like it the most, only the one I want has a round barrel (please undertsand, I know NOTHING about BP guns. YET).

So if anyone can ID this gun, you have my thanks.

The gun in the picture sure looks like a '58 Remington on a loading stand.
If you want a round barrel AND a topstrap, the only common gun I know of is the Ruger Old Army. It is not a period repro, but is probably stronger and easier to get running than an authentic copy of a Remington, Colt, or something obscure. A good choice to learn with.

I understand that some of the questions I have may seem like "old hat" to some here, and I almost didn't post this. I really would like to enter the world of BP, it's just that I know nothing about the sport. Is there a good book to reead on the subject? Also, what are the best places on the net to order the guns from?

Ahh, so many questions. I suppose the first thing I should do is research. Any good books or web site pointers would be most welcome.

Dave try "The Complete Blackpowder Handbook" by Sam Fadala, another good one is "Blackpowder Hobby Gunsmithing" by Sam Fadala and Dale Storey. The Revolver in the picture is a reproduction of a Remington New Model Army. I have three of these. They are a little bit more finicky than the Ruger Old Army revolvers but they are very good shooters and quick to reload with spare cylinders. My Remingtons are Pietta's as sold by Cabela's who also sells spare cylinders for around $25.00 each.

I recommend that you join the NMLRA. They put out an informative magazine called "Muzzleblasts". You should also attend some Buckskinner Rendezvous as you will get to meet many ML shooters.

Looks like I've got a lot of studying to do. I hate to go into things like this blind and I really do want to know more about the sport.

There are so many facets and areas of interest in the BP realm...Revolutionary war.. Civil war... Mountain man and all points in between..All have their own charm and weapons..

Do some reading and find out what you like..
