Does anyone know what this is? Perhaps not even a bayonet? Although it does look like it is made to attach to something.

It looks like a bayonet that was converted into a fighting or field knife. I know little about bayonets, so I can't tell you what it originally was.

    Odd

The rear mounting doesn't look like it would serve without a front ring, but the "guard" doesn't look like it had a top ring originally.

Short rear mounts required a front ring, but I don't see that as having the length for an unsupported front.

I'll bow to the experts on this one.

There should be markings on in front of the guard if they've not been polished off. They'll tell the tale for the piece.

Sure looks like a customized/modified M1905 Garand bayonet to me. Guess that should be "former" bayonet. I'd reckon it doesn't have much $$ value other than "cool factor" value.

A lot of people in the 1950s bought military surplus stuff and "sporterized" it because it was cheaper than buying new. A lot of our hunting and camping gear came from the Army/Navy Surplus store.

    Yep,

Garand Bayonet or 1905 bayonet used on both the 1903 Springfield series rifles and the M1 Rifle

Appears to have had the "guts" removed. Those slots up front are to go over locking lugs on the sheath and for the button that allows the knife to be removed from the sheath or rifle. There is not locking lug in the bayonet slot.

The locking sheath allowed for knife fighting training with out the danger of an exposed blade though a smack from the sheath with the knife in it could be painful and even bruise.

Seems to be chromed or at least the guard and pummel. Such chromed knives wre used by drill teams and honor guards and some were available from places like MS Meyer all chromed up and sometimes with white enamel painted sheaths.

Looks like a home made wood sheath in the photos.....how midievel....which brings up the possibility that some SCA/ renfair type put this together for his costume.

Since this is an odd bayonet thread, I have an oddball - it's an M1917 USGI Bolo Knife, that has had the handle and mechanism of an M1905 bayonet grafted onto it. Works fine, it snaps onto my M1 and 03A3 both just like a bayonet should. It's cool and different, but rather useless. Still has the original scabbard too. Very well done, it's hard to tell it's a Bubba job. Somebody put a lot of effort into it, and I respect it for that.

    rondog,

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Philipine Constublary or Army had some of those made up at one point and there had been such a bayonet for the Krags so one was wanted for the '03 when they got it. Could be wrong though.

Might want to check into it though.
