    Bushing?

    Howdy Silent One.

Yep. A bushing that fits the slide tighter reduces play between the slide and the bushing and returns the barrel to battery more consistently to the
    same place between shots.

Tighter barrel to bushing fit also helps. Anything that gets the barrel
to the same spot after the shot helps. Other things come into play as well.

Tighter fit at the rear of the barrel between the slide and the hood. Tighter
vertical lockup at the breech end. Even fitting/mating of the locking lugs in the slide...and to a lesser extent, tighter fit between slide and frame. It
all adds up, and there's no one thing that turns a 5-inch pistol into a 2-inch
pistol. Even the firing pin strike figures in...whether it's dead center in the primer or not.

There's a point of diminishing returns, though...The tighter the gun is fitted in these areas, the less reliable it will be(on average) when it gets dirty or even hot.

Later on! I'm waitin' for a cheerleader to call just any time now...

    O.K. I'll cheer .....

Your answer was absolutely correct. And a detachable barrel bushing that can be fitted to whatever purpose is at hand is one advantage the Browning 1911 design has over most of it's more modern competitors.

    Old Fuff,

Ain't that the truth?. The .45 ACP is the most versatile handgun ever produced IMHO. All the rest are just playing catch up.

    good luck, and be safe.

And that folks is what happens when you work on guns long enough, to have seen and heard any and all questions and problems.

Oh and the Hoppe's bottle is empty and you substitue a newfangled product in your coffee.

They will be ok , new bottle of Hoppe's and a drop or two in their coffee, and they will be back to normal.

Of course does one really have a definition of normal?
I've always been told I dont' fit the definiton...;)
