Cannon shell found in West Toledo

BLADE STAFF

Two men on a lawn crew who were just finishing their work in West Toledo and decided to salvage a dorm-size refrigerator they saw in the trash at the curb late yesterday afternoon found what is believed to be a 20-millimeter cannon shell underneath the appliance, Ottawa Hills police said.

The men were working on a lawn at Emmick Drive and Crosby Way about 5:30 p.m. when they grabbed the refrigerator and found what they believed to be an M-50 mortar round, Ottawa Hills Officer Yarko Kuk said.

They called 911, but tired of waiting for a response to the scene and about 6:30 p.m. they decided to drive the ¾ of a mile to the Ottawa Hills police station, with the cannon shell on the front seat of their pickup truck, Officer Kuk said.

Police called the Northwest Ohio Bomb Squad and blocked off Richards Road between Bancroft Street and Hillandale Road. The bomb squad described what they found as a 20-millimeter cannon shell and safely put it in its vault, the officer said.
