Both. Seriously.

In time, many shooters/carriers may end up with one of each of the poll options. In my case, a 6+1 .45 ACP and a 14+1 9mm. Both of them compact sized. It let's you have the option of what your gut feeling or brain thinks you need for the day.

A variant of this poll comes up every few years, and it never works. The average participant can't think outside the box, and it slides into a formfactor "slim 1911 vs" or "I shoot X gun better, and it happens to be in this caliber" debate over specific platforms. That's an answer to a question. It just isn't the question that this POLL has asked. :(
I was under the impression the scenario you describe is pretty much what these discussion forums are about; an opportunity of enlightenment for all the variables one should consider for a given question.

I vote 9mm. I shall keep my reasons to myself.

9mm....What post #2 said + capacity.

In a high stress heart pounding situation with you shooting from awkward positions and most likely one handed, you are NOT going to be shoot as well as you normally do at the range! This applies to most people.

Don't believe? Do a run and gun - get your heart rate up to about 120 bpm and try to shoot your target with one hand while taking a step or two.

Here we go. This poll should be old guys (45) vs younger guys) 9mm
I voted .45 and I suppose I qualify as an old guy, but I'm not saying the .45 is the only way to go. I've got two SD guns in .45 (G21 and G36) and also two SD guns in 9mm (G17 and Ruger LC9s). I feel well equipped with any of these guns and don't feel undergunned at any time.

Yup :)

Although my decision is between .32acp, .40S&W, .45acp. and 10mm...
usually a combo of two of 'em ;)

IMO, the poll itself is unrealistically skewed to give a slight edge to .45 (or at least, detracting from 9mm's full advantage), because it should have been stated as being between 7 and 15 rounds (not just 12).
I like the .45, but given the fact that the newer 9mm.rounds are vastly more lethal than they used to be ( pretty much on par with a .45), and given the fact that 9mm. is nearly HALF the cost of .45, and given the fact that most modern 9mm's will give you TWICE the ammunition in a fully loaded pistol, any vote for .45 is largely based on irrational criteria from nostalgia to stubborness to outright ignorance.
( OH, NO HE DI' NT !!! :neener: :D)

why is capacity always brought up when you have the option of carrying another mag?
Because the majority of people do not carry an extra mag or reload.

And because I can keep shooting a lot faster than I can reload.:D

Hell I'll carry a 5rd .45, a XDS, with a 7rd backup. I shot .45 since my bullseye days in the 80's and don't even own a 9mm but do own lots of .45's.

I just turned 30. I carry a .45 and no longer own a 9mm. So where does that leave me?

45 almost every time Chances are I would be shooting at a drugged up criminal not a crew of gang bangers . personal preference is big heavy bullets for SD

There has never been any documentation that shows 1 round of 45 is significantly better than 1 round of 9mm. when comparable bullets are used. Even if it is 7 rounds of 9mm vs 7 rounds of 45 it is going to be a tie. The difference is small, but 40 and 10mm will out perform either.

I own all 3, in addition to several others, I'm confident all will work.

People keep telling me the 40 recoils more than 45. Maybe so, but the difference is mighty small, and worth the added performance of 40 over 45.

I have no idea why the .40 Short&Weak even exists -- except for politics of course. It's clear why the 9mm, .45ACP and 10mm exist. The .40 Short&WeaK? Not so much.

the OP asked for carry gun , so single stack is the way to go , if you can't handle a 45 then go with a 9mm or 38 or 40 ..... so I voted 45acp only based on the single stack factor , oh and I'm almost old :neener:

Where's the .40 option? It would do well for having a big bullet plus good capacity in a smaller sized platform, which is why the .40 is ideal.
