Carbine or 5.56

I am considering a carbine/rifle other than my 30/30. Want something that has ammo readily available. Want something with larger capacity than the 30/30. Would be used for fun but also home defense just in case the SHTF. Probably not shooting farther than 100 yards. I guess the original question is not as simple as I thought. I do appreciate the discussion.

Well, I think you’re describing an AR in 5.56. The 5.56/.223 round is better than a pistol round for HD or SHTF in every single way except for how loud it is when fired indoors.

That said, a pistol-caliber carbine might be more practical since some can share mags with your handgun and pistol rounds are generally less restricted at ranges, especially indoor ones.

That picture made me smile.
To the OP I would prefer a pcc if it's primarily a range toy. There is something to be said for lack of muzzle blast. If people consider a 9mm in a handgun as adequate home defense a reliable carbine would be better. Back to muzzle blast, have you fired a .556 inside a building without hearing protection?

For fun at the range a pistol caliber carbine beats a 5.56 for me and is what I shoot more. As a practical defense and varmint/deer hunting tool the 5.56 wins but the PCC isn't useless.

Have to be some version rifle caliber. I see no need to haul around any rifle at all that only shoots a pistol round. That's what pistols are for. Rifle rounds are nearly always much better for everything.
