Carrying Loose Rounds?

I carry a full load in the rifle, minus one. Thats so I can quietly remove the chambered round at the end of the day and push it back down into the magazine and then close the bolt over the top of it. On my person I carry 5 more rounds in a pocket in one of those red plastic cartridge holders that federal uses, cut down to only hold five.

But in the truck or back at camp I will have a full 100 round MTM box minus whats on my person and in my rifle. Overkill? Probably so, but once I have a pet load I load 100 at a time. That gives me enough to recheck zero with or for the friendly competitions that we occasionally have at camp.

I forget the brand, but back in the 1980s I would buy .30-30 ammunition that would come in the 20-round box preloaded into two 10 round red plastic carriers that could be clipped to your belt.

Anybody else ever seen ammunition packaged this way?

In my previous post I mentioned that I cut those down to hold five cartridges that I carry in my pocket.

My hunting jacket has pockets sized for a box of 12 gauge but it works perfectly fine for other ammo as well.

And a pocket for dead birds
And 2 pockets with warm fuzzy liners that you can slip your hands into to keep them toasty on a cold day.

Which type of hunting rifle has a 5rd mag? .223 or Scout type rifle?
My savage .223 and also 300 Blackout AR or bolt action platform, Ruger American in .308 is 4+1. I’m sure there are others, but that covers a wide spread, especially considering the AR platform is so wide reaching.

The modified type. I had a gunsmith file off the bottom of my mag follower, inlet the stock under the mag spring to remove wood, and put in a stronger spring. Took my Savage 110 from 4 rounds to 5.
Any AR 15 platform (.223 or 300 BO) there are 5 round mags, Ruger .308 or 300 BO is 4+1, savage .223 is 5. I haven’t needed to modify anything yet

Yeah I know most hunting rifles are 4+1, it's typical to have a bolt action hunting rifle with a 4rd mag unless it's a .223 in which case most of the more popular hunting rifles make a .223 version that takes a 5rd vs 4rd mag, most jurisdictions only allow a 5rd magazine for hunting and most manufacturers make their rifles accordingly but there is only a couple that I know of that have a 5rd mag. Was just curious if ya had something cool that I didn't know about that wasn't a .223

Normally I only carry what is in the magazine, which is 4 rounds. In bear country I'll cary extra 3 rounds on my rifle sling. It has inserts for 3 cartridges.

Or perhaps because if you end up needing all the ammo in the rifle for whatever you're hunting, carrying an empty rifle and a bunch of raw meat back to camp through bear country seems like a bad idea.

A pocket works great. Most outdoor coats and jackets have them in abundance.

I, have a sewing machine. This is what I came up with. Took some materal, wraped it around some thick felt. Sewed it al together. To form a rectangle. In the center, I sewed some 2 in, elastic. Then sewed the elestic in equal spaces, big enough to fit the ammo in. on each end I sewed on velcro. After in put the ammo in the elestic, it gets folded up like a tri- fold wallet. Made some for differnt people, and gave them away. Every one like it.

Gotcha
300 AAC , but it’s the same mag for my .223 ARs as well.

I do not like to carry loose ammo or in a butt cuff/sleeve. I like the MTM sleeves or boxes because they keep the ammo cleaner and drier. I prefer lever actions and they do hold a lot of ammo particularly in 357.

You mean these? IMG_4685.JPG .. IMG_4686.JPG . Years ago I used to fill one up with ammo and put it in my day pack or fanny pack. Back in the 1990's I was picking these up off the ground all the time while cleaning up my club's rifle range. They have "FEDERAL" written on one side. This thread reminded me that I still have a few kicking around. Haven't used them for hunting purposes since I went to the little belt carrier in my previous post. They came in handy for testing handloads, too, would make up 10 rounds for trial purposes with an identifying note held on with a rubber band wrapped around it. Nowadays I use a 20 round slip top box for things like that. Still have a few of these plastic carriers around here and I think I'll hang on to them. They do hold ammo securely and orderly versus loose rounds.

Hunting rifle, I only carry the magazine capacity of the rifle. That's the way its been for (58) years.

For deer hunting I carry a full magazine plus one. With bolt actions that usually means between four and six rounds.

If I'm out looking for hogs I carry a full magazine in the rifle, plus another full 20 round mag in a cargo pocket.

My Tikka T3 6.5x55 with extended magazine is 5+1. Also Mausers, Springfields, Mosins and a lot of M1917's (Hey, they're ALL hunting rifles to me). :D

IMG_1273.JPG IMG_1274.JPG I carry three rounds in a wood block epoxied to a scope base mounted on top of my scope. (Ruger #1) will post a picture this pm. Just going out the door right now. I carry 10 more in the plastic carriers from the factory box.

Im still looking for a good carry option for lever action rounds. Would like a belt pouch semi-rigid or sturdy material with a fliptop lid capable of holding 30 or so loose 44 mag. Something oriented more horizontally than vertically( aka shallow depth) that I can easily access and scoop a few rounds at a time. Cartridge loop belts are too slow for me, I load faster with a few in my hand at a time. Tried some longer med pouches and other tactical utility belt pouches but they are too floppy, you have to get the zipper pulling just right and burrow your hand in to chase the last couple rounds around.

I carry a small backpack when hunting, and slip the box my ammo came with inside one of the pockets.

When I don’t carry a pack, which is kind of rare, I slip a few in my pants or jacket pocket.

A cuff on the stock would work well too, I’d imagine

I, #1 carry "loose rounds" in a magazine and #2 I carry them in an ammo wallet.

I may carry a few .22 in a pocket but I prefer having them in a case of some sort. Loose rounds can spill on the ground and be lost and left behind.
